I saw a post a couple of weeks ago about someone who built thier own FEL. Was kinda toying with the idea. Anyone got any info?
Thanks!

Get a kit unless U can really fabricate. Several suppliers can be found here. I used a CadPlans plan & MetKit kit for the components. If U can weld then it is fairly easy. If U can not weld then it is a pretty good starter project because U can really tack, grind, reweld until U get it right.

Gotta warn ya, steel is high right now.

Other then that, it should be a great project.

If you want to be "cheap", check out Surplus Center for hydrualic parts. Or possibly ebay for stuff. There might be some stuff at the surpus center that will work. All depends how how big the tractor you want to put it on is also.

I would guess that the min. required equipment is a stick welder (or big mig), plasma cutter (or torch) and possibly a band saw (or cut off saw). From my experiance in fabing things, I recommend getting lots of clamps and even those funky magnetic holders/clams (or an extra pair of 'assistant' hands-aka other people).

6011 rod should work fine for a loader. 7014 would work, but make sure you V the joints for a good penetration (they say 7014 is a shallow penetration rod....seesm to be deep enough for me. ) /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Just completed the CadPlan 501 model last fall. Super! I hadn't done any welding in many years, yet the finished product can handle stacking 1500# hay bales to the 2nd level on a trailer. I recommend CadPlans. Purchased the hyd. cyl. from Northern Tools, and the controls from MetKit.

Equipment required: loved the little mig welder for tacking, but the stick welder is a must for the heavy welds. By the time you are finished you'll know a lot more about running a bead. Used both 6011 and 7014. Need the metal cutting band saw, drill press, ½" drill (and bits) and at least 1 hand held grinder. I had both a 4½" & a 7" and both had their place.

MetKit can send you every thing you need all cut out. But to save a little money, and really feel like it is your project find a metal supplier that will work with you. A lot of them will help you out just because they think you are nuts!

If I were doing it over, I'd use standard 7/8" pins that you can buy at a farm supply instead of trying to make the 1" pins as proposed. Turned out to be a real pain.

Good Luck!

Hey, Adron nice loader. Pic is a little blurry though. I plan on making a new bucket for mine in the near future.
By the way what model is your tractor?

I built one and for me, it was a very satisfying project. I would also add I wouldn't want to do again very soon. Economically, it didn't save me any money but your situation may depend on availability of parts. I would also agree with those who recommend a kit, or consider modifications to a good used unit.

A few general things to consider if you get or fabricate a FEL: 1. Make sure it attaches to several points on your tractor to distribute the wear and tear inherent with loader use. 2. I added power steering to mine and you may regret not having it if you add a loader. And finally, 3. make sure the weight transfer does not make your tractor rear end so light, you can't move any kind of load in the bucket (it happens even on factory set ups). Good luck, be careful and have fun.

I designed/built one for a 16 hp MTD. If you can do drafting then you should be able to figure out how to configure it for lift and dumping. Mine was kinda crude since I'm not good at packaging. But it works fine.

But a kit would be fun too. Metkit, and Cad* both sell the plans as well as the kit.

Cat, I would love to see a pic of that, as i plan to make one for a tractor similar size to that. How did you get hydraulics on your tractor?
please post a picture of it
Thank you very much
Cheers

Me, too, Cat!

Sorry about the blurry pic. I was trying to stay under the size limitation on picture uploads. Anyway, it is a Yanmar YM2500 tractor, and a 1007 loader (not a 501 as I stated..whatever was I thinking). Thanks
