Bush Hog SQ840

I have been looking for a 7' 3PT rotary cutter and a dealer told me, on the phone, that he has a used Bush Hog SQ840. He stated that it is only a couple of years old and that it is a heavy duty unit.

I have been unable to find any specs for this unit on the net, not even the Bush Hog site, but from a couple of old posts on other forums it looks like this unit is not highly rated and is a light weight unit.

Can anyone give me some insight into the Bush Hog SQ840.

Are the Bush Hog units reliable?

Any info is appreciated before i drive an hour to see this unit.

I have a Bush Hog SQ 480 (48") and a 285 (5'). Bush Hog calls the 480 light duty and the 285 medium duty. The SQ is actually mounted on the FEL of a 45hp tractor and hydraulically driven so that it can be raised up and dropped into 3-4" trees. Over the past 10 years I have broken several blades and bent the housing up pretty bad. But the gear box seems to be holding out just fine.

Might be an SQ84. If so, it is a dual spindle offset mower (so it may be a SQ84O rather than SQ840) See: http://www.bushhog.com/images/stories/documents/manuals/sq36-sq84old.pdf for a manual.

Directly out of my Squealer Operator's Manual:

SQ-840

L=120"
W=88-1/2"
Cutting width=84"
Weight (est)=925lbs
Type hitch=Cat.2
Gearbox hp=90
Blades=1/2"x4"
Shear bolt size=Slip clutch
Recommended tractor hp=50-85

Sounds pretty heavy duty to me. It weighs more than twice as much as my SQ-480
NOTE: The SQ-84T is the lightweight Cat.1 model at 720lbs with the same cutting width as the SQ-840 but recommended only for 25-50 hp tractors.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the info. From your resposes I will have to go take a look at the cutter, it is advertised for 1600 which is about half what a John Deere model MX costs.

the only thing i dont like about the sq series cutter is the Egg shaped stump jumper, the one i use is so bent up i somtimes rubs the top deck of the cutter. the full circle stump jumper maintaine their shape a lot better.
