BX24 runaway on start up, black smoke, stall

My BX24 ran away on start up and spewed thick black smoke for about 30 seconds. I could not shut it down with the key. It stalled and I can't get it to fire.

It turns over great, I checked the fuel filters and both are clear, fuel pump is pumping fuel. Where to next?

Hmmm.....check your oil. If the engine somehow starts burning it's own lubricating oil, it can run away. I'd be suspicious if the oil is too full or too low. I'd want to make sure the crankcase ventilation system was all in order. If it is burning it's engine oil, the fuel cutoff won't work.

Other than that, in a gas engine, you need fire, compression and gas/air mix. In a diesel, you need compression, diesel, and air. I'd check the filter and make sure the air is available. It likely will be available, so next I'd have to look at compression, leaving the injector pump for last.

The injector pump needs diesel to be supplied under light pressure, and then it pumps it into the cylinder under high pressure. The amount of fuel is regulated by a governor system. If the engine was not burning engine oil, it was burning diesel, and therefore the injector pump itself was causing it to run away.

Thanks! When I checked the oil before it was in the operating range but low. I topped it off and it started right up.

I don't think you savvied what EE was saying. You should be concerned that your engine is consuming it's motor oil, and combusting that. The engine could continue to run away, and dry out the crank case

I am betting a spring came off or broke in the governor section of the fuel pump. The fact that it stalled and won't restart is a bit worrisome.

I had my tractor run away burning its own oil .. it was on its side at the time .. but the smoke was white/blue, black smoke probably means its burning diesel.

Solution doesn't seem to fit problem...just bringing oil level up from bottom to top of operating range shouldn't have "fixed" issue. Possibly a coincidence...from runaway description, sounds like engine was "flooded" with fuel...probably intermittant fuel delivery problem...contaminated fuel, crud, sticking injector(s), pump, or something else...

I agree. Topping off oil does not "reset" anything on the BX engine. did you check the oil and see if it smells like diesel/feel thinned? If you say it was operating range low meaning you added about a quart? when was the last time you checked it and how high was it the last time you checked it? Are you sure the engine ran away? screaming faster and faster on its own? if not perhaps it was a blown fuse or a intermittent fuse for fuel shutoff.
