Having a hole digger handy is breaking me up! Lowes has trees on Clearance for 50% off at some stores and 75% at others. My Lowes had them at 50% off and I asked the Garden Center manager if he'd match the other Lowes with 75% off, he did. Bought 4 Maples priced at $45 each for $11 something each. Told my brother and he went to get one, told him to get me 4 more, he got 2 for himself instead of 1 since his brother next door has a BH. I went back and bought 5 more yesterday and dug the holes for him and me and mowed most of my yard then had to get to the Grands soccer game by 6:15.
Would not have bought these and dug that many holes if I didn't have the BH.
Economics wise the BH is a bad deal, don't buy one!! There is first the additional cost of the BH then the added cost of buying more stuff to plant or just buy to stick in the ground since it is so easy.
I even bought two 25', one 8' aluminum poles to make this cross since I had a BH to dig the hole to set it in and the tractor to move it and raise it. Pictures attached. Still have one 25'er left to come up with something to do with it.
Don't buy a BH. i LIVED 6 TRACTOR YEARS WITHOUT ONE SO IF YOU HAVE ALSO, DON'T MESS UP AND GET ONE NOW. :DI've also leveled off alot of flat spots on hillside because of having the BH.

Sounds like you have yourself in a pickle there. I have been thinking of buying one, but my mother would have the house left up on an embankment 2700 square feet in area. you would need a ladder to climb down from the basement entrance.

Looks like you got some fine trees. I like all of those. Last year I went to Lowes and bought all the remaining B&B trees for one price. Over 50 trees, had to buy a PHD to plant them. Kept about 45 of them and gave the rest away. Since I've gotten rid of the PHD now, I figured it cost me about $5.50 to $6.00 per hole not counting the holes I dug for brother, nephew and neighbors. I wouldn't have dug the holes for $6 per hole. Don't need PHD now with BH but there have been a few times it would have been better. PHD is great for tree planting.

You've used it to do all your projects and now don't need it.:) I to may be there some day.:) Actually I don't agree with LB and rarely do. I don't need the BH but I sure have been using it alot since I got it and won't give it up now. I've avoided projects that required digging holes because I hate a manual PHD and shovel. I've been able to do most projects with FEL but there are some that the BH is only choice and others the BH is best choice if available.

I have a BH and a PHD. The PHD is better for fencing and gate supports. The BH holes are too big and take too much time to dig for fence posts and gate posts. Once you get the knack, you dig a hole for a post with a PHD in 30 seconds or less. Hope this helps.

I agree, if you have both or the money for both. If only one can be bought the BH is more versatile and able to do more jobs. The PHD while good is pretty job specific. The BH costs about 10 times more than the PHD.
