Twice now I have broken different welds on the 3pt Sway Links (the welds from the loops to the nuts).. In examining the rest of the welds, they are all pretty poor... Anyone know of an upgrade for these tiny little links? The first time one broke I was making a really gradual turn with a 4ft Brush Hog.. The second one broke when I was doing a bit of grading with a 4ft blade (one notch off of square creating the side force)... It seems these links in stock for just can tolerate much side loading at all..

Don't know if they're any stronger, but there's a TBN member here that sells telescopic stabilizers that replace the turnbuckles. Just can't remember what handle he goes by or where I saved the link to this site. Maybe someone else will post a link or his name.

I believe you are referring to Mark Hodge. The product he makes can be found here StabilWorks

Take Care,

Definitely not right. Mine have been through a lot over 8 years and still as good as new. I suppose of you took a hard turn and snagged your cutter on a stump or something, there would be enough force to snap a link, but just ordinary use should not cause such a problem.

Are they maybe too loose, and the implement is slamming them back and forth until one breaks?

I had mine on too tight once and snapped one of turnbuckles. Upon looking at it, the welds looks pretty cold to me as the molten weld is just a puddle on top of metal but holding the U part fine. I just grinded the old weld off and rewelded it back on with a hobart 125ez. no problems since. I didnt bother to reweld the other poor welds of turn buckles figures its just as easy to do it later when it breaks as I have access to my welding machine 24/7.

Thanks for all the responses guys.. I will definitely check out those telescoping links. I have a pile of welders, so welding these back is not an issue, and I agree that the welds were way to cold, not a good bond at all.. It is entirely possible I bumped a stump when turning with the shredder, but the blade was just a consistent, and relatively light side load.. I am definitely not leaving them too loose, I have a bit of a fetish about getting my implements set up properly..

Are you tightening them til they are snug or are you cranking them down real tight?
