John Deere 2320
I am looking to buy a brush hog for my John Deere 2320, I was wondering how well the tractor handles a 4 foot rotary cutter, but I was also wondering if anyone has used a 5 footer behind a 2320 and if the tractor has enough PTO HP to run the 5 footer. I will be mowing relatively flat fields that are mowed every 2 years so there isnt any big saplings or any thick brush in any of the fields. With the amount of area I have to mow I am hoping the tractor will power 5 footer so I can get the job done faster. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Chris

I don't have a 2320, or a brush-hog right know...can I still answer?:D

The general rule of thumb is 5 horsepower per foot of cutter...With that said-I think you will be able to run the 5' cutter in heavy grass, on a fairly level field. Since you will now own the cutter you could cut it yearly also.

What you need to watch for is the weight of the cutter you are looking at. The cutters hang very far off the back of the tractor! You did not mention if you have a FEL or not...but either a FEL or front weights will be required.

As mentioned in your previous post, I have the LX4 foot for my hilly area.. I handles it quite easily, but I did have to lower the 3pt pins to the lower position to get the wheel to lift off the ground..

In heavy (3 to 4' tall) grasses with the 4' I have to take it pretty slow or I dont get a good clean cut.. The tractor has enough power to go faster, with the PTO at 540, its just that anything faster doesnt give as good a quality cut...

If your fields are only mowed every couple years you may be even going slower so the 5' can give a good clean cut.. so you may be giving up ground speed for width of cut.. It could be a trade off in time though

good luck

My father has a 4110 and tried to use my MX5 in alfalfa up north. It was too much for his machine. I think he has less HP than the 2320. but it was too much weight also.

I had a JD 2210 with a LX-4, it sucked. The 2210 would overheat in a hurry if it was very thick at all. I ended up cutting with my MMM more than the LX-4.

I have a 2320 with the LX4. I would agree with nmu98; in heavier stuff a 5' cutter would probably be too much for the tractor. Attached pictures shows a field I cut last fall.

Thanks for all the info so far, I wish I could find a decent 54" brush hog, I found one eBay made by "Value Leader" mower model SL-140, but when I typed the maker in on google nothing came up, so I guess if finding the makers website is that hard, parts for the mower will be even harder to find. I will go with a 4footer so that way its not to much for the tractor to handle and also to keep weight hanging off the back to a minimum. If anyone has heard of this Value Leader brand or has one let me know.
