Ok, I know its not rocket science but. . .

My Normand blower came with a pto shaft that has a ring coupler on the tractor side. To engage it you have to push the ring toward the tractor while pushing it onto the spline. To remove it the ring has to again be pushed towards the tractor while 'trying' to pull the shaft back.

Total frustration

I just can't seem to be able to free it to pull it back. I would just use another shaft BUT this one has a shear bolt at the blower end.

Any suggestions would really be appreciated!

I don't have one of those, but I though you had to pull the ring torwards your self not the tractor to release it.. so to put on the shaft you have to pull towards yourself and push the unit on the shaft.. to remove you would pull the ring towards yourself and pull off of the shaft. Again I don't own that kind, but I though that was how they worded.

Could be burr or something in there giving you the trouble.
Try spining position a bit, going forward again to original operating position maybe slightly tap it around with a rubber mallet and try it again.
When you get it off I'am sure you make sure its burr free and lubricated well. I own a peice of equipment w/that type of shaft James is correct you have to pull back on collar and pull shaft off at same time.

Two good suggestions already, thanks om & bullbreaker.

The reason I said it has to be pushed forward is because it is spring loaded towards the back - but worth a try to go the other way.

bullbreaker if nothing else, I do grease my tractor & implements more than they need :)
But it sure is possible that somehow there is a burr in there. . . too late tonight but first thing tomorrow I've decided I'm going to pull the shaft apart to make it easier to deal with just the one side.

I'll let you know how I make out

Did it snow there last night ?? :D

Can only throw a couple suggestions out. Spray some jizzbang on it to give it some extra slip n slide.

Like I say to the ladies with the short shorts......... jiggle it, jiggle it, jiggle it.

If you do get it off , use a small file or some sandpaper to clean up the spline a little.

Good luck !

Oh.... if none of that works, resort to a BFH ! ;);)

This may or may not help, but it won't hurt...

With the engine OFF (and the key in your pocket), engage ti PTO. That'll keep it from turning while you struggle in trying to push the ring forward and pull the coupling backwards.

You probably already knew this, but perhaps you've forgotten. I have one such coupling on my brush hog - hate 'em. Of course, I hate the button types too :) None of them are "easy". Best of luck.

Most of you's know this but when trying to attach a P in the A pto shaft alone I have bungee corded it or tried tight rope across bottom to suspend it almost in place to eliminate stress and not get as physically beat up trying to get on. Off I've never had trouble(yet).

I have a Normand snow blower with the ring on the PTO shaft. I have to pull mine back to attach or detach. Makes it a PITA to attach because you have to pull back and push forward at the same time.

Success

I pulled apart the shaft to make it easier to handle. Then, taking K0UA's suggestion I tried pulling the ring back. It worked.

After getting the shaft off I looked at the end. What I was pushing on was a spring loaded plastic 'dust ring' that moved in the opposite direction. doh!

Because I couldn't get the shaft off when I swapped my chipper for the blower I just left the blower shaft on. The problem is the blower shear bolt on the shaft is tiny compared to the chipper's shaft shear bolt. Every time I tried to use the chipper I would blow through shear bolts. That's why I really had to get the **** thing off.

Just spent 3 hours chipping all the branches/trees that came down in that freak October snow storm. Life is good again :)

Many thanks to ALL!

Glad you got it going. PTO shaft's have vexed us all at times.. I practiced with mine a few times and have it working pretty good now.
