Hello all

I bought a used GT 2521 last year, it is a 2005 model I believe. It has mowed reasonably well, only had 70hours on it when I bought it.

I went down to mow a few days ago and it would not start. Absolutely dead, not even a clicking sound when turning the key.

I took the battery out and replaced it with a new one, still nothing.

I then attempted to jump directly to the starter from my Kubota tractor, still nothing.

What would you guys think next, do I need a new starter at this point. I appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
Matt

This sounds like a switch issue (Seat, brake etc) I would probably not jump direct to the starter but figure out where the voltage stops. Could be the regulator too but thats speculation on my part.

Thanks Carl

I'm a bit of a novice in regard to working on tractors. I can do most of the basic stuff, maintenance etc. However, I am unsure where to start to try to diagnose this. Do you have any tips on where to start at this point. I have inspected all of the wiring and all seems to be ok. Is it possible this is an ignition switch issue?

Thanks and apologize for the dumb questions.

Matt,

OK - There are several circuits that need to be happy before power will go to the starter.

1. Seat Switch
2. Reverse Switch
3. Brake Switch
4. PTO On/Off Switch (Mower Blades)

Usually, the wiring looks first at the seat switch, then the brake, then it should start, the PTO and reverse switches work when operating (not to mow in reverse, or start with the PTO "On")

There is a fuse in your system too - I dont have the wiring diagrams for your machine tho here is a link to parts for your machine where you can see all the relevant pieces.. Hope this helps a little. Parts and Diagrams for Cub Cadet GT2521-48 Tractor

Thanks Carl, I will look this over and see what I can do. Much appreciated.

Carl,

Went back and inspected everything again. There are 2 fuses in the system, one is blown. As a longshot, is this possibly the problem. Again, some of my questions are embarrassing to ask!!

Thanks,
Matt

Hey Carl,

After reading some more online, I thought I would mention one more factor. Earlier this year, my PTO belt snapped, a piece of it propelled upward and damaged the wiring that goes to the headlights. It did not want to worry about repairing this since I never mow at night. I taped up the wires with electric tape and it has bee doing fine. Could this be related to my problem at all or to the blown fuse.

Thanks Carl

Yes - replace with a new fuse - get several maybe a 10, 15 and 20 Amp.

Also get a digital voltmeter ($20) at auto parts or sears or wallmart and before you replace the fuse check both sides of the terminal voltage first - should have 12V on one side.

The side that doesnt have 12V check the Ohms to ground. If you get a direct connection to ground then that side is shorted out - if not put in a new fuse and go. If it starts great, then if if blows a fuse say when you turn on the mower you may have a bad coil in the PTO.

Also check and see where the wiring goes - it could be a bad switch or rubbed wire. Try to find a wiring diagram on line too.

Good Luck

Matt,

I was posting at the same time you were - defintely the PTO damaging the wiring to the headlights could be the issue.

Check each wire for chafing or damage and if in doubt since you dont use them disconnect the wires going to the headlights - should be a plug somewhere near the front.

Even tho you dont use the lights they usually turn on in the middle switch position on CC machines so they do come on as you start the tractor, and if there is a shorted wire it will blow the fuse.

Hi Matt,

No need for embarrasment on any questions, how else will you learn...
I think your original assumption about jumping to the starter should have worked to at least get the tractor to turn over.

Depending on the tractor in can be difficult to get to the positive connection on the starter.
(Generally a large red connection) your negative can be clamped to the frame.

You will get a substantial spark when you make the connection.

Carl's troubleshooting may be a safer approach to diagnose and it seems unlikely the starter is the issue.

I've never seeen a completely dead starter on a Cub!

Good Luck,
Curt
