In about 1955, my best guitar playing buddy and I won an amateur contest, and our prize was an appearance on a local TV show, "The Prissy Thomas Show". We played our couple of songs, and much to our surprise, the next guest was Fess Parker. He was a tall, handsome dude, and as I recall, had on his Davey Crockett outfit. He was interviewed, and afterward, she asked him to sing "Davey Crockett". He said he didn't bring his guitar, so as fate would have it, he borrowed my buddy's guitar. We were eventually introduced, and got to shake his hand. I noticed that he had a huge scar on his jawline on the left side of his face. I though he had been injured on the movie set, but after some research, here's what I found:

From that same era I met Clint Walker the star from the TV series "Cheyenne", and talked with him a bit when he was visiting his parents store in my hometown.

A little more memorable was chatting with Barbie Benton when I was about 16. She was drop dead gorgeous and very friendly and nice.

worked in a theater as the head rigger/ lighting/stage manager in college. lots of well known comedians Jeff Dunham, Gallagher, Wayne brady, John Oliver has a very funny bit about the upper peninsula and his show at the place I worked. lots of smaller bands like reel big fish, they might be giants, others. a few movie people at Sundance film fest like Allision Janning and Ed Helms the year cedar rapids was debuted there.
my most prized interactions were with Alan Parsons and his band Alan Parsons Live Project. we did a few concerts with them and they were artists in residence for a month or so. a great and fun group of people. also did the lighting design for a Mary Chapen carpenter concert, confederate railroad, and worked at dollywood for a summer, and got to see dolly up close. she was great, the people around her were jerks. she was doing a presentation in the theater i was in charge for lighting for.

Not me, but my son. He was stationed in Iraq as a crew chief on a Blackhawk helicopter. His unit ferried Trace Adkins around to the small bases where he gave concerts. It was aired as a TV special on the Country Network (I think). I have a copy of it and there is a scene where Trace Adkins is shaking hands with my son. We assume it is my son, he has his flight helmet on. But how many 5'2" crew chiefs are there? The difference in height is rather comical.

My best celebrity story is Richard Gere.

Back in the day, I was at the Beverly Hills Hotel for a Board meeting. I went to the gym to run before dinner.

I’m running along on the treadmill when a guy gets on the one next to me and starts running. This gym has mirrors everywhere - including in front if the treadmills. We are the only 2 humans in the gym.

I look at him while running and decide I recognize him from somewhere. Can’t remember. 10 minutes later it dawns on me!

So, we run for about 30 minutes and he stops. I also stop.

We are just standing there toweling our faces so I say cleverly - “you’re Richard Gere”!

He looks at me and says “yes”.

He doesn’t walk away or anything. Just stands there looking at me. So, I say “can I ask a silly question“? He smiles and says “sure”.

I ask -“why in the world would you divorce Cindy Crawford”? (Now, keep in mind I had a huge crush on Cindy Crawford ever since the Pepsi Commercial days).

He starts laughing. Not a chuckle but a real laugh. Then he looks at me and says “for you, Cindy is the most beautiful woman in the world. And she is beautiful. But in Hollywood, there is always someone more beautiful. Always. Always. The temptation is irresistible”.

I say “can you introduce us”?

He asks “what do you do”?

I say “I’m an accountant”.

He says “nope” and walked to the showers.

Funny you bring this up when I have tickets to see Gee Watson in Greenville Tx next week. We were never pals but crossed paths many times growing up near Paris Tx. You knew Gene was around by the swarm of girls. In addition to injoying his music phrases, places and names in his songs bring back memories of growing up.
Employers usually ask what was your favorite job to which I said bell hop at the Sheraton-Dallas Hotel in mid 60s. Some people were so different in private you might fail to recconize them but a few projected the same persona making them hard to miss. Brother Dave Garner had his coon hound on a leash and spoke in the familar way that made him famous. Tex Ritter was one of my childhood heros and I almost went off to hide and cry when he came in with a young man barly out of his teens. The two spoke and behaved in a fashion that demonstrated effection and love for one another and the youngster came accross a bit feminine. That really bugged me until,,,,,,,,,I saw Three's Company and realized why Old Tex was so fond of his young sidekick. I was relived but ashamed of myself at the same time. That experience has alowed me to be a little less judgemental of folks.

Martin Short in Denver Co at a cigar bar in the Brown Palace hotel. The guy oozes happy.

That reminded me I used to work for Owen Garriott when he was VP of Space Programs at TBE. Met weekly in his office.

Also met Greg Gutfeld at a book signing.

I spoke to Sandra Bullock through the speaker at the gate to her house one time. Does that count? Turns out she does not care that I have a hall pass. :ROFLMAO:

I was on an annual fishing trip with my dad and friends in Bull Shoals, Ar. I was leaning against the railing on the dock where the guides dock their boats and let their customers off. Some guy walks up and leans beside me. He said "thanks for taking my sons and me fishing today, we had a really good time and caught some good smallies". I glanced over and he was handing me 200 or 300 dollars, I couldn't tell which. When I looked up it was Phil Donahue. I didn't miss a beat. I said "I prefer to meet Marlo". He laughed and we talked for a bit. I had to finally tell him I wasn't his guide. when I saw his guide we looked nothing alike.

Well, I can't compete with any of you hobnobber's.

I did give Norman "Boomer" Esiason a speeding ticket late one night. So I guess you could say I got his autograph. He was not in a very good mood (circumstances being what they were).

I shot pool with Jerry Jones (owner of the Dallas Cowboys) back in the mid 80's in a bar in Stuttgart Arkansas.
It was a Monday night and the Saints were playing on the tv in the bar. He is from Arkansas and was in town for some duck hunting.

I have also shook hands with 3 different Rotary International presidents.

My wife and I saw Bill Clinton when he was Gov. of Arkansas and just beginning to run for President.

She is from Little Rock and we were there for Christmas. We were shopping and he pulls up (driving himself) and double parks and runs into a store.

A while later he comes out of the store with a gift, gets back in the car and leaves.

So, we saw him but really did not meet him.

I was shocked he was driving himself with no bodyguards.

Used to see Charles Bronson rather often. He did not live all that far from me and skied on the same slopes. He was very quiet and stayed to himself o n the slopes. He bought me a drink once in an airport bar and we talked a bit.

I used to work with Shannon Lucid (female astronaut from Oklahoma) at a Research laboratory in OKC before she became an astronaut. She was an X-Ray analyst, and was working on her PhD at the time as I recall. Her name was Shannon Wells at the time; married a Chemist that worked at the Lab by the name of Mike Lucid. I replaced her when she left.

This is my favorite story. When I was in college, I was working in a grocery store in Bethany Oklahoma. One day, this guy, who looked familiar, came in by himself. We weren't busy, so I was stocking shelves. When he got ready to check out, I went up and directed him to my check stand. When he had made his purchase, he gave me a check signed "George McFarland". I looked at it, looked at him, and asked him "Are you Spanky?" He said "Yes". I asked him what he was doing in Oklahoma, and he said he had relatives here and was thinking about opening up a liquor store (Oklahoma had just voted "wet").

He came in several times after that, and he invited me to come to his new BBQ restaurant that he opened in OKC. Went there several times; it was only open for a couple of years, and he closed it. Never saw him again.

I also worked in a grocery store in New Mexico, where Glenn Campbell's wife, Diane, worked. Saw Glenn many times, especially at a bar called "The Hitching Post" in Albuquerque, where he played.

I met Bob Wills when I was about 5 years old; in Pawhuska Oklahoma; Dad took me up to the bandstand and I got to shake hands with him. I also met Lady Bird Johnson, Barbara Bush and Red Buttons.

Nothing recent. Me and the wife ran into Al Pacino at the airport in NYC, he was buying a magazine. He had a police escort. He looked pretty disheveled (like he slept in his coat and just now got up) and was sort of awkward.

My wife shared an elevator with Brad Pitt, Angelina and their kids. The little asian boy bit his brother, and Angelina grabbed him, knelt down and screamed at him "STOP BITING", and the little sh*t started slapping her!

My wife also met Mr. T at the airport, he was very cool.

When my dad was in the merchant marines he was stationed somewhere that I don't recall now. I think it was on the east coast. He went in a barber shop to get a haircut and the place was a roar of laughter. I finally realized Red Skelton was in the chair getting a trim and telling jokes. He had the opportunity to talk to him for a while as I remember. Sure wish he was still around to ask him about it again.

True story...

I dated a girl when I was 24, for about a year. She was kind of a little older than myself. Smart, beautiful and had a good position with a bank (she wasn't a fluzie).

One night out at dinner, we're talking about stuff, and the conversation goes to sports, and she mentions her last boyfriend was a pro baseball player. Non other than Pete Rose. Honestly didn't believe her until I saw some pictures later (she got kind of tired of me saying I didn't believe her LOL).

Only time in my life I was in awe of my girlfriends old boyfriend.

For whatever reason out of curiousity, looked that girl up a couple of years ago. She's a grandmother and in her 70's. Needless to say, I felt pretty old.

My company won an award presented by the CA Governor. Our product developers should have gotten recognition-- but the Gov's office wanted to present to the CEO instead. That was me.

The press would attend so there would be plenty of photos, but our Marketing director wanted a one-on-one photo of me and the Gov for his portfolio.

He called the Gov's office to inquire and arrange this, and was told: "I'm not sure the Gov will have time, right afterward he needs to attend an event to help retire his large campaign debt. [HINT HINT]

She asked me how much $$ to offer for a photo. I said zero. So I have a nice photo with about 6 of us instead, which is fine. Funny thing is, I had earlier made a sizeable campaign contribution as a private individual, but not via my company.

Only sports pro I ever met was Curtis Strange. The golfer.

I was at a ProAm and saw him just standing at the club entrance - I assumed waiting for a car.

So, I walk up and say “hello Mr. Strange”.

He looks toward me and says “not now pal I’m busy”.

Never really appreciated him after that encounter.

Years later a charity I was volunteering for had a fundraiser where we sent white ties to “personalities” to sign, return and then we would sell.

Hale Irwin was one of the personalities we sent a tie to autograph.

He did this with the tie:
IMG_1522.JPG

Never met him but always respected him due to his generosity.

Living and working in NYC, met many stars, models etc. from Liam Neeson to Kevin Kline, Woody Allen (wow is he short) etc. and of course Abe Vigoda we saw all the time as he lived around the corner from us.

I worked in the building where they used to put together the SportsIllustrated mag (saw many of the swimsuit models and sports people in the elevators)

A few meetings stand out though.
Jay Leno - real nice guy, met him at a dinner, he is very shy of "fans" due to some bad incidents.
Roy Scheider - Had to ask if he would join us for drinks, he declined, but spent about 10 min with us shooting the breeze. He was wearing his signature rain coat.

Devo - hung out with them smoking cigars after a concert on Long Island. Mark M. is very unusual.

Met a lot of rockers at CBGBs and other clubs, along with a passed out Debbie Harry. Peter Gabriel was nice and went down the line when I saw him at "My Fathers Place" and stopped to speak with us for a bit.

A party at a friends apartment with Joan Jett. His neighbor was a producer who had also worked with Ted Nugent.

When I was 18 I went with a good friend of mine and his dad out to L.A. for spring break. We stayed at my friend's uncle's house. One night we were out driving around and saw searchlights in the sky, so uncle Kenny drove is over there to see what's going on. It was the premiere party for The Muppet Movie at The Coconut Grove in Hollywood. So we swing through the parking lot and see the famous Muppet car and a bunch of people and Muppets milling around. He drives around back and looks for the dumpsters. We park and get out and go into the Coconut Grove through the basement loading dock. I'm thinking, "Man, we shouldn't be here" and Uncle Kenny is like "we do this all the time."

So he finds an elevator and pushes the button. The car arrives, the elevator doors open, and Dick Van Dyke steps out of the elevator in a tux and full makeup. He looks left and right, then looks at us and says "Hi fellas. Looks like I'm on the wrong floor." Then he laughs and smiles, steps back into the elevator and off he goes. :ROFLMAO:

Man, that's cool! NYC is the place for that definitely. We saw a few other celebs just around town and also by the park, but didn't come up to them.

Several years ago I had mandated Police Officer training. At that time Erik Estrada was a Reserve Officer with Muncie, IN as part of a TV show. Erik attended the class and we spoke with him during breaks. I guess if I had his money I wouldn't have been stuck in the class.

Oh, now that you mention golf, I know Dustin Johnson pretty well. I've played golf with him a few times. He was a teammate at Coastal Carolina with a friend that graduated high school with my daughter. He used to come to our little course and play from time to time.

Another story: I lived in Grand Prairie, Tx for 6 years or so and was a member of Great Southwest Golf Club, since closed. They frequently had US Open and US Am qualifiers there. Lee Trevino's son was in a qualifier. When I came in the clubhouse after playing that day some of the guys said that Lee was out on the course so I went out to catch a glimpse. He was playing in a practice round with his son and a friend. I rode along following them for a few holes. They got on 14 and Lee said "If you gonna ride along you might as well play". So I played 4 holes with Lee Trevino. Funny, funny dude and can still play golf, or he could then. It's been a few years ago. He and I both birdied no. 17. 180 yard par 3. I made a long putt, he was inside the leather.

I worked at the local airport here in South Bend, IN for 6 years at the FBO back in the 80s. The University of Notre Dame is here. They used to have many big-name musical acts come to perform (this was before stadium shows took over), as well as a lot of other famous types, politicians, business people, sports personalities, TV people, etc. We'd service their aircraft as requested.

Many of them would stop and say hello to us on the way in or the way out. Some wouldn't. Some would smile and wave. Some were borderline incoherent. I'd say about 60/40 friendly and outgoing to maybe having something else on their minds ratio.

Many times they'd give us free tickets to the concerts. All we had to do was walk up to the will-call booth at the box office and give them a name. There's be tickets waiting for us. And I mean good seats, not nosebleed section. Usually in the 1st 10 row and a few seats off the isles.

It was a good perk.

You know what's interesting? Some regular guy pulls in with a little 2 seat Cessna 150, and tries to buy gas with a credit card. We have to call for authorization, and then call a 2nd number, then jump through some other hoops for a $40 purchase.

Kenny Rogers pulls up in a BAC 1-11, takes on 1500 gallons of fuel, his pilot hands you a Phillips credit card that says Kenny Rogers on it. You call for authorization on a $3000+ sale and the voice on the other end just says "Authorization approved #12345. Thank you." and hangs up. That was something back then.
