I'm thinking about getting a chipper for the Case. I'm cat. 1 w/ 24 hp. I see DR and Might Mac offer a PTO driven unit. Any opines? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Please realize you have roughly 19 PTO hp available, 24hp is the engine hp. Make sure you size the chipper for the PTO hp you have, not for the engine hp.

Are you planning on just "chipping" or chipping/shredding? How large diam. branches? From what I see, online, if just chipping, the DR looks like a reasonable match but, at the max of your hp if your pto hp is 19. The Mighty Mac spec.'s don't seem very clear, or maybe I'm not looking at the right unit.

Have you physically seen either of these? A DR warehouse is 10 min.'s from where I'm working (showroom is about 45 min.'s away). If I can get a look at one, I'll pass along what my impression is. One thing I couldn't find out online was how many knives it uses. So, I just called them. It's a single. They say they tried a 2 knive version but it did not work as well.

Hopefully, others have more experience with pto driven chippers.

You want, or at least I do, a chipper that will feed itself, preferably feed rollers. Otherwise your in for a lot of work.

Even if you get a bigger chipper it doesn't mean you have to run a 5 or 6" log through it. However you need to make sure your tractors 3pt will lift it safely.

Thanks for the info guy's. Both the DR and Mac units are sized for my 19 PTO hp. Both are 7 ga. steel bodies, use a single knife, do not have roller infeeds like a commercial unit. Both about 250 lbs /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Still looking, prehaps I'll just hire someone to come in and chip the branches. For less than the 2K the units cost, I guess I can get a local tree company for less.

Didn't notice anyone suggest renting a chipper. Is that an option for you?

Proabaly be cheaper than hiring someone and certainly cheaper than buying one.

I have the DR 16 HP stand-alone chipper, which is almost exactly the same as the PTO unit. It will handle 4" logs but struggles a bit with green material that size. 19 PTO HP should be fine. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I just received a DR Chipper flyer in the mail. I've never seen one in person but right now they're 10% off, free shipping (to a depot), free extended warranty (3 years) and a 6 month free trial - they'll pay for return shipping & 100% refund.

I can't speak to their quality or if it'll handle what you want done but 'the deal' sounds like a good way to find out.

I got the DR Chipper (PTO) on their trial basis. I used it for about 4 hrs and got the chance to figure out what size I really needed. the 4" capacity seems huge, and it probably would do everything, if everything came in straight sticks. The throat was too small to take the kind of branches I wanted to chip.

I now have as my main chipper a Valby CH140. It has a 9"x12" throat and is rated at 6 1/2" capacity. Do a web search for info on it and you will be impressed. Expensive, but what isn't, it's worth every bit. I'll buy another one, when this one wears out, in maybe 60 or so years..... The only thing that it doesn't like is "christmas trees", they are too dense at the top to feed. I imagine that is where a power feed would be handy...

The DR people are real good to work with, and I had no problem returning it (free shipping back). I didn't use it enough to scratch the paint.

I purchased the Jinma chipper. It has two knives. The flywheel alone weighs 250#. It has a mechanical feed system. It is your typical Chinese product. It took a few hours to get everything adjusted and tightened up. It has given several hours of service without a problem. I feel it is worth it's price. I rented a couple of chippers before I bought. They were all in such bad shape I couldn't chip anything, they just chewed and chewed but wouldn't chip.
