Hello,

I am buying my first tractor, to maintain my property in TX. It is about 15 acres, and needs work, like brush clearing, evening out the land, planting some grass, and moving debris like logs, branches, etc.

I am looking for about a ~40 HP (front) tractor, and have checked out some options:

  1. LS Tractor LS XR4140H Hydro Base Tractor ~$23,400
  2. LS Tractor LS XR4145 Hydro Base Tractor ~$26,000
  3. Kubota L3901 Hydro ~$35,000
  4. Kubota L4701 Hydro ~$29,000
  5. Kioti CK3510 HB ~ $18,900
  6. Kioti CK 4010 HB ~$20,900

I am leaning towards the LS, most likely the XR4140 with a cab.

Do you all have any thoughts on this model or pricing? Is it worth looking at Mahindra as well?

Thank you
Tan

All of those are good tractors, and I think would serve you well.

Definitely take a look at Mahindra. In fact, it wouldn't hurt to look at every brand with a dealer near you.

I'm guessing the 35K for the L3901 is a typo. That said, if you're looking at the 3901, look at the 3301 as well, as they're the same tractor with only a few HP to separate them.

Thank you @PJSProg

How has your experience been with LS?

I am leaning towards LS because of the additional value for the money compared to Kubota and/or JD?

What do you think?

Any tips on what tires, and other dealer add on options I should get? My land has ponding/water accumulation in areas.

Thank you,
Tan

I looked at most of those models and ended up with an LS4145HC. The prices you stated are pretty much in line with what I found. I like the refinement and quality of a Kubota but couldn't justify the extra cost and weaker loader specs over the LS. The dealer network is a little thin for LS right now so service might be an issue depending on your location.

My experience with the LS has been great. It's been a very solid tractor so far. That being said, we've only had it since September, so it's still pretty new.

The "bang-for-the-buck" factor was what sold us on LS, too. Wife initially wanted a Kubota, and I was leaning towards Mahindra. In the end, LS won the comparison battle. Owners here on this forum helped sway in their favor as well.

Dealer is important. My closest Mahindra dealer is a trailer sales lot 90 miles away, the local LS dealer looks like they could take the sign off the fence and move at a moment's notice, the Kubota dealer doesn't want to talk to newbies, the Case dealer wants current retail for a 3-year-old demo with 86 hours on it, and the Kioti dealer is a long established dealer who added Kioti to his existing line, has three locations, active parts and service departments, and acts like everyone he talks to might be the only one he gets to talk with all week. He'll spend as much time with you as you want, answer any questions, and give you his best every time. They got my tractor on a dealer trade because it was the last of it's model and what I really wanted. The original dealer didn't set a couple things up right, which showed up after my dealer delivered it. I called the dealer on Sunday evening, he had a tech at my home (40 miles away) the next morning - who went over the ENTIRE setup checklist and tightened/adjusted/replaced everything until it was perfect. My salesman's grandfather opened the business, his father owns it now. I've sent him three easy sales since.

I am curious as to what dealers you are getting prices from? You and I are 13 miles apart and haven't had much luck with the Woodville location. Went to Alvin and drove a XU5055c and XR4155HC. So far I have contacted Woodville, RCO in Austin, and WRI in Bryan as well as Alvin location.

WOWCO is not much on communication either, not to mention the want a kidney and a ss number for one of there machines.

Hello there,

Looking at the list you provided, I would go with the L4701. Only reason is the HP. I own a 40 HP tractor and it is great but I wish I had more HP. I have 16 acres I am starting to work on now. I am getting ready to buy a bush hog and have posted in the "attachments section" about what size to get. If you are going to be doing quite a bit of heavy cutting like me you need to go with a mid to heavy duty bush hog. My tractor size is right on the limit of what I can handle for a mid to heavy cutter (35 PTO HP). It has been a pain trying to decide on which one to get. If you are going to also be moving logs I strongly suggest getting your loader set-up with a grapple bucket. I already had a 4 in1 on my tractor when I bought mine so the hydraulics were already up front when I got the grapple. I don't know how I got along so long without the grapple bucket. It paid for itself on the first year I bought it. You will be extremely happy if you get the grapple bucket. You also need a heavy duty grader box for leveling ground and pushing debris into piles.

I guess the biggest factor is how much money you can afford to spend on the tractor. I started out with just the bucket and grader box on my tractor. 13 years later I have an additional $ 15,000.00 on attachments and implements. They are expensive. Buying new from a good dealer you can probably get a break on some of the attachments if you get them now.

I personally think horsepower is overrated. Look at tractor weight and loader strength as well as horsepower. You don't want a light high horsepower tractor if you are doing lots of loader work or ground engaging tasks. High horsepower can allow you to use larger implements to be sure but before you buy more horsepower than needed to run six foot implements (about 40hp) check out the cost of 8 and 9 foot implement. You'll be shocked at the price jump. I'd rather mow a little longer with six foot mowers than spend close to double to get 25-50% more cut. Six feet is the sweet spot for CUT implements IMO, if you want wider then think of getting a utility size tractor (75hp and much bigger frame).

On the other hand, you don't want a wimpy loader (hello Kubota Grand L, I'm talking to you:laughing:) with a high horsepower engine and light frame UNLESS you are mostly doing finish mowing. If you are maintaining a gentleman's horse farm that might make sense. If you have land clearing or ground engaging tasks to do then the LS, Mahindra and Kioti (all excellent and comparable) are going to be much better bang for the buck.
