I've noticed lately the PTO gear 1 on this MT372 needs some babying to engage. Usually just have to double clutch, or do a clutch--roll off the brake an inch--slot into gear type maneuver to get there. Sometimes wants to click in rough, but sometimes I get it just right and goes in smooth.

PTO 2 & 3 engage very smoothly. Also 1 will still disengage nicely.

Does anyone know what might be going on in there? Hasn't been more than 25 hours on new trans case fluid. I have not tried adjusting the clutch yet, but it doesn't have gear shift symptoms if that's it. My gut tells me this gear has been abused?

Let me know if y'all have any ideas. I really appreciate it!

Hard to say, I do not remember clearly on mine before I split the tractor.

Currently I have to be in neutral and clutch to shift pto speeds. You already know that pto 1 is your slowest, so it does somewhat depend on engine rpm.

If my rpm is pretty low I can usually clutch and shift into it while in gear.

Thanks for the reply--I'll try shifting pto while I'm in neutral, different rpms and see if it acts different.

It runs smooth, no complaints there, just the engagement that is catchy. Watched a bunch of PTO rebuild videos trying to get a mental image of its guts.
