We adjusted our clutch like the book says. It grinds something terrible now and doesn't bottom out when you push it in. So we did it the opposite direction. It stops and grinds even less but it still grinds?

What do you suggest now?

Need a little more info.

Why did you adjust it in the first place? What was it doing? Basically all the adjustment does is give you some free play so you can push in half an inch on the pedal before your foot pressure begins to push on the clutch.

When you push it in, does the clutch do what you expect it to do? Does it completely disengage the power from the transmission?

By "grinds" do you mean the clutch plate assembly makes a grinding noise when you push on the clutch ?....
Or do you mean that when you push in the clutch the transmission grinds when you try to shift gears?

luck,

Yes, the free play keeps the throw out bearing from riding on the pressure plate.

You need to adjust it back so it has a half inch movement before it hits pressure plate. Then get it started. Put in gear. High gear is better. Let out clutch until it bogs engine, but don't make the tractor move. Not being hard, just ease out on the clutch a little.

Your problem sounds exactly like a rusty set up. Don't smoke the clutch, just slip it a little. Clean the rust off things.
