I was doing some brush cutting today and when I was parking my tractor I was listening to my clutch, when the clutch was mashed all the way down I heard no sound in the transmission but when I let off the clutch I could hear a sound that sounded like a gear turning inside and it also makes a slight clicking sound. The tractor has always made the slight clicking sound since it was new, its a tc30 and now has 470 hrs on it, but I just now noticed the gear sound when the tractor is in nutral . Is this normal to hear these sounds when the tractor is sitting still with nothing engaged and the clutch is all the way out? These sounds are not loud, but I do notice it when the clutch is all the way out, hopefully nothing is wrong with it being this new.

I suspect you have a failing clutch throw-out bearing. Does it only make noise when the clutch pedal is depressed & vary with pedal pressure? Is the pedal fully disengaging or is it riding on the throw-out bearing all the time? MikeD74T

The clutch when pressed all the way down doesnt make any noise, when depressed you can hear a slight gear type sound. The clutch doesnt ride are anything, what will eventually happen to the tractor if it is the throwout bearing? If it is the throwout bearing, will the tractor have to be taken in half to fix it? How much does this usually cost? I cant get over this tractor giveing me this kind of trouble being this new, I grew up with all John Deere and never had a major problem with any of them except belts and stuff like that.

IF it is a throwout bearing.. yes.. it will require a 'split' to replace.

I'm not completely familair with the trans and pto options that unit came with.. however.. on some tractors, if they have a independent pto.. just depressing the clutch does not mean that there aren't still shafts turing in the transmission..e tc.

what type of pto / trans setup do you have?

Im not very mechanically inclined so forgive me, the tractor I have is a NH tc30, the tractor is gear driven not hydro. The way I engage the pto is I pull the lever on my left side up toward the front of the tractor and then depress the clutch to start it, the sound is barley noticeable actually, its always made a slight clicking sound since new but I was just playing with the clutch yeasterday and was really trying to listen and noticed that it sounded like a gear was turning in the transmission. Thanks for replying to me.

I think what you experience is normal. When You clutch to separate power from transmission (I.e engine turns, flywheel turn but transmission is not engaged". Conversely, when you let out the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel engage hence the main transmission shaft... at this point if gear in Neutral lay shaft is only turning but the no driven gear is turning which is the source of what you are hearing. Now what you need to avoid is to have your throw out bearing so close to the fingers on the pressure plate that they always slightly touch the when the clutch is out... that will damage fingers on pressure plate, throwout bearing or both. solution there is simple by adjusting the clutch free play where throw out beating is not touching the fingers while clutch pedal is out.

Do you have live PTO? Is your clutch dual stage (I.e pressing the clutch halfway to change the gear , all the way to engage PTO ..AKA dual clutch ? from the description I think you have transmission driven PTO.. your transmission lay shaft will continue to turn when engine is on, gear in neutral and the clutch is out( pedal not pushed in). that's the noise you here. it is plauseable that the your loosing clutch adjustment and throw out bearing is starting to touch finger on pressure plate. again, fix is easy and need to be done to avoid damage. I don't reckon anything is damaged now.

You need to refer to clutch adjustment on TC-30. Dual clutches are a bit more tricky since the same throw out bearing pushes against two pressure plate, usually first pressure plate is for transmission and second pressure plate for PTO. In either case let out clutch pedal will cause transmission lay shaft rotate freely when the gear is in Neutral position. Again, throw out bearing should be touching pressure plate fingers only when the clutch pedal is pushed in to change gear or separate the engine power from wheels.
