Carpenter ants got under the bark near a branch on a Poplar here. Branch just slid straight down from the damage. Was about 20 feet long and 8" where it attached. Just missed my shed.

A common myth is that "carpenter" ants eat wood...they don't...they remove rotted wood to create hollows for their nests...
