Cost of Changing Filters- WOW

I had a local Kubota dealer pick up by B2150 to have the tires changed.

Since I was already paying for the p/u & delivery, I figured I'd let them change the oil and oil filter, fuel filter and air cleaner to save me some time.

But when I got the quote for that service I about swallowed my tongue.

$300 !!!!! PLUS PARTS !!!!!

I have already called the other local Kubota dealer who I usually use, and even with paying for another p/u & dely charge, I will still save a bunch of money. Plus, I will mount my mower on the tractor and the second dealer will include servicing my mower deck as part of their "Spring Service Special".

The lesson here is......it pays to check & compare prices for any service.

I agree that DIY is the cheapest way to go.....

And it's not really all that difficult.

I just figured I'd splurge and let someone else get the oily hands since they had the tractor anyway.

The dealers usually offer a decent Spring time service package.

For the DIYers, I was in our local NAPA store last August to buy a new fuel filter for the truck and the sales guy said if I can hold off until (I believe it was) the second week in September, ALL NAPA FILTERS were half price (or near to-again memory) for a week! I said "All?" "Even tractors?" He said "Yes!". This was not just a local promotion, it's an annual nationwide sales event. After I cross checked my brand of tractor's filter prices on the internet, I walked out of NAPA with an armload of fuel, oil and air filters, some of which they (prior to the sale) ordered in for me. Check it out and plan ahead for it.

I like DIY for the fact of how some "Chuckleheads" don't care if my tractor gets screwed up from over tightening stuff or just not caring.

That dealer must be owned by my accountant, who (unknown to him) is about to be fired. $1000.00 to do my personal taxes and an s corp I have for aviation consulting that netted me 6 grand last year. First time I haven't done my own taxes since I started working in 1998.

Filter prices are outrageously priced for a lot of equipment. My cartridge filter for my F250 is $20! This filter probably does not cost more than $1 to manufacture.
Here is the deal. One of the major filter manufacturers hired a new CEO. (This is probably 10 years or so ago now). The new CEO came in and looked at the business. He asked how many of the parts (filters) we manufacture are a specialty item? How many are available from other manufacturers? He immediately went up on the parts by 20+ % for items not readily available from other manufacturers. The same is now true for those manufacturers. If there is no competition for the same item in the market place. They can charge what they want for the part....

By the way, is there a cross reference chart for Kubota filters to other brand filters? I have the M5040 that I will need filters for again soon.

I always compute it this way. If the oil, filters service is $300? I can do it for half. Sometimes, even a bit less.

I also would rather do it myself, because no one, no one, is as careful with my machines than I am. My son, with me watching, is my second choice.
