When towing a turbocharged tractor it is common practice to tape an upright exhaust stack shut to avoid having the wind blow in the exhaust and spin the turbo bearing without oil and burn it up. Newer compact tractors have the exhaust exit under the edge of the hood where the wind might not affect it. Anyone know if you have to cover the exhaust pipe when towing this type of tractor--specifically the Kubota MX5100 that I just got? The exhaust exits up front by the power steering at the bottom of the hood. Anyone tow an MX5100 or other turbo?

No cover was on our M8540 or L5740 when delivered.

There wasn't a cover on my new M5140 when it was delivered either, just a couple of days ago.

Personally I am a believer in covering the exhaust on any turbocharged engine. Most engines stop with one cylinder on overlap and it is posible the air can cause the turbo to turn and possibly damaging it on start up. If you have your own vehicle, the best cover I have seen is a plastic jug screwed to a 2x4and you just hang it over the tip. if you are going to be at speed put a staple in the back side and tie it down with a bungee cord. the same thing works great for any exhaust that is standing up to keep the rain out, and it is cheap to build.
Just a thought

I have never covered them other then for the overly cautious and have never had an issue. Could it cause a problem, possibly but I'd find that rain going in a pipe might cause more of an issue!
We did have a fellow tell us we hurt his when we hauled it, his neighbor told us that he had it start leaking three days before he called us! Funny thing!

I have a NH TD95D that I hauled from NM to MT a few years back. The owners manual advises that the exhaust be taped closed to prevent windmilling the turbo without an oil supply since the engine lube system is not running. Engine lube oil lubes the turbo bearings.

I tow mine a lot, I have never covered it. Also as someone else mentioned, the dealer didin't cover it to deliver it to me. I have never given it a thought until this thread was posted.

I don't own a turbo but I always thought that in order for the air to spin a turbine, it had to have a clear passage both IN and OUT.....With the engine not running where would the air be able to exit?
I still cover upright exhausts to keep the water out......

No, they'll spin if give the opportunity with access to an air stream and with no oil it's a big problem. Sounds like Kubota thought ahead and angled the exhaust the right way.
