After owning our rural land for 7 years my wife and I finally moved into our new house in South Central Wisconsin this past July. This is our first winter here and in the past two weeks we've started to see Coyotes coming quite close to the house (within 50 feet this morning). There's still a lot of snow cover here and it may be difficult for them to find their usual prey causing them to be so bold. We have a small dog and I'm hoping to learn if there are ways to discourage the Coyotes from coming close to our house. I have shot near/at them a couple times now and they leave quite quickly but I doubt this has the effect I'm hoping for where they all talk among themselves and and the pack knows those people are anti-Coyote and avoid our land. Thanks for any suggestions or help.

You need to hit the critter, not close,
"delete" one or two of them and they will decide that the place is not safe to venture near,
It is the only way I know of that works.

We periodically have domestic animals killed by coyotes/coy-dogs/coy-wolves around here. One either has to live with them on their terms or follow BHD's suggestion.

So bold?

We live in an older neighborhood with hundreds of small houses on 1/4 acre or less lots and the coyotes walk between the houses on a regular basis.

And yet we still have a proliferation of feral and pet cats. :confused3:

Hey neighbor! When we moved into this new home, we too had coyotes in the yard. But, over time, we never hear or see them near anymore. Do what I do, mark YOUR territory.....often.

Coyote and fox aren’t scared of much. Very curious and territorial animals. I find tracks from both occasionally passing or circling within a few feet of my house. A few years ago a red fox was in a territorial war with my German Shorthair Pointer, each marking multiple scent posts around my property daily. The fox even walked up on my snow covered front porch and took a crap within 2 feet of the door.

What a pity, socialism has begin spreading to wildlife. Self respecting coyotes would harvest stray cats rather than become dependent on garbage cans and pet food bowls. :santahat:

We have coyotes and bobcats, both which will prey on our small dogs, cats, chickens and ducks. We used to have regular losses of chickens and ducks and then we fenced in their area with electric net fence from Premier1supplies.com. Predator losses have been 0 in the past 3 years. We also fenced in our backyard with 4' fencing so they dogs have a protected area. It also helps that we have 4 dogs, so 1 coyote may think twice about taking on 4 dogs. Its not a guaranty of any kind, as I know coyotes and bobcats could easily jump the fences, but so far they have not.

Got these pics in the last couple weeks. The coyote camera is in the woods 300 ft from the house and the bobcat camera is attached to the barn.
