I have a broken "ear" on the door of my wood stove.

How would I go about welding it? I have a Lincoln AC/DC stick welded.

Cast Iron Welding
These guys have quite an opinion on the subject...
Then there is Lincoln: Stick Electrodes for Welding Cast Iron | Lincoln Electric

I remember repairing a big hand plane body which had cracked on one side when it was dropped onto a concrete floor. I ground a deep V groove for the weld material and then pre-heated it good with a acetylene torch, then used a special rod for cast iron repairs. Ground down the repair and finished it off on a belt sander.

Having said that, I doubt it was as highly stressed as your stoves pivot lug. It looks like a Vermont Casting stove, you can probably get a replacement. If the door of your stove decides to fall off right after you load it up with wood and then leave home for a few hours, it could be a bad deal.

I wouldn't stick weld it at all.

I would braze it. (brazing rod and ox/acetylene torch) Be sure to preheat, and let it cool down slowly.

Or, as suggested, just buy a new door.

You can try welding it.
Remove the door from the stove.
Remove the glass from the door.
Get the right nickel rod.
V-notch the crack, but figure out some way to align everything so the hinge doesn't bind when your finished -
you may want to knock together a quick fixture of bar stock & vise grip clamps to orient everything.
Preheat the material to be welded.
Weld it.
Bury it in a box of sand or wrap it in an insulating blanket so it cools down slowly.

You can stick weld cast without issue's, done it a many times and never had any problems. The key IMO is heat, I heat before and after with an old propane cooker, when I'm done welding I but the piece back on heat and slowly start truning the heat down. I bought my rod from TSC not sure of the number but it does say cast iron on it with 55 nick. It's not that hard just take your time make sure things are lined up and like I wrote use heat.

Ok, thanks guys. I will give it a try. If it doesn't work I can always get a new door.

I had a door break in exactly the same place. It is a Vermont Castings Resolute. Cost around $40 for a new door ordered from my local stove shop.

That's not bad.

There are plenty of places to purchase a used door for that Vermont Castings stove.

Try calling the Preston Trading Post in Ct. Telephone
860.886.1484

Tell them your looking for a used door.... They may have one...
