craftman lawn tractor will not shift out of gear

I have a craftman lawn tractor and it will not shift out of gear when the clutch is applied. Can anyone give me some ideal as to why? and what would it take to repair it.

What model do you have? Also what type transmission. This might not apply to your Craftsman, but I just had to weld the bracket that holds the transmission in place. Broke both ends which allowed the whole thing to move on my Craftsman 5000 garden tractor, it would move and was then hard to shift.

I an craftsman lawn tractor Model #917.271530 6 speed 42" cut. I have another one not a craftsman and it has a locked up rear end as well. I sure it in the rear trans axle were I don't know.

first try shifting the engine turned off. if it shifts easily then most likely the belt isn't disengaging all the way. may need to make an adjustment in the clutch rod to get it to fully disengage. If it still doesn't shift, I would try lubing the linkage going into tranny. They will rust in that area, and make it hard to move the shifter. As far as the locked up tranny, I would check the brake mechanism on the side of the tranny. They tend to stick when the brake is applied.

Thank you Randyt, I will look into this. I did not know that The drive belt could cause this, does this happen on other tractors of different makes and model?
