Looking at putting in a deer fence and will buy an auger for my tractor next year. But in the mean time, the deer are really putting the whack on my young madarin trees. They're either rutting on them or outright chewing, grabbing with their mouth and acting like Warren Sapp on a spin move/stunt. I'm too close to other houses to shoot and I really don't want to knock out the local deer population. Anyone have some creative deer remedies until I put the fence up.

Also, I have 27HP at the PTO on my JD. Will this operate a 14-inch auger? I used a bobcat to dig tree holes last time. I have a top and tilt kit on the rig. Will this be sufficient to auger this size of hole?

Thanks, Tracy

Tracy,Do you have a dog?Usually just having a dog piddle on bushes on your property will make them wary in areas where they are hunted.Unhunted deer in residential areas are a different story since they become accustomed to dog scents...Mike

Plenty of power. I have drilled quite a few 12" holes on my measly 17 Hp PTO, and usually with tractor set at just above idle.
Deere remedy: 1. Get a dog and tie it near your trees so it puts it's scent there, the deer will avoid the scent even after the dog is gone. 2. Have a beer party and put three ribbons around each tree. Ask your guests to urinate near the base of a tree, and then pull off one ribbon. When all the ribbons are pulled down, your trees are protected.

There are some deer repellents that you spray on your trees. You can also try putting human hair around the base of the trees. (The local barber maybe able to help you out big time with that)

Another thing you can try is putting up two boundaries of fishing line. Make one square around the area you want to protect, and then another larger square about 5 feet larger. The deer hate touching things they can't see. You will have to keep checking on the line, for they will probably break it from time to time.

Here's what i posted on CountryByNet:

Get an alamac there are usually some things in there. From the 2002 Blum's Farmer's & Planters Almanac (page 86).
Deer Buster Tonic:
2 eggs, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 tbsp of tabasco sauce, 2 tbsp of cayenne pepper ans 2 cups of water. Pull all into a blender and puree. Let sit 2 days and spray it all over the plants you want to protect.

Folks around here use that yellow caution tape/crime scene tape and put around gardens. It seems to work and it's cheap enuff of try.

If you're near a coast where shops stock deep fishing supplies get a roll of 150# test line. It's guaranteed to spook deer. When they hit that stuff, they're in for a surprise especially if they're running. If you can get to the docks, there's usually miles of discarded net available for little or nothing. The nets I saw were twelve feet wide.No deer can go through or over that stuff.

Beats the hell out of paying for so-called deer fence. Besides you never know when an elephant might get loose and head your way. The net should stop Dumbo as well as Bambi. Around here the companies selling pipe to the gas and oil companies usually have three or four inch used pipe available at a reasonable cost. Makes great posts. Less digging too!

Of course the sounds of the deer bouncing off your "fence" and doing the same off the ground might keep you awake at night. Try not to smirk when the neighbors ask what all the commotion is about. Not having any close neighbors, I find my 30-06 fence works best. It not only stops them from chomping on stuff it keeps them from breeding too.

I have some land in the country where I "farm" and deer hunt and have had a lot of time to observe deer in the wild .

Dogs seem to have little effect unless they run loose . My neighbors have apple trees and I have watched deer eat apples within 20 feet of a chained barking dog . They have figured out that he can't get to them . They even let me drive within about 30 feet until they stepped into the edge of the woods . I watched a couple of dogs mess around in a deer scrape and follow their trail from my tree stand one day . Less than 10 minutes later a buck came in . He did not seem to be the least bit bothered by the dog smell .

I was working on my tractor one day about 20 feet from the woodline . After about an hour of hammering , talking and so-on . I looked up and a couple deer had walked up to the edge of the woods to see what I was doing !

To a deer , pee is pee unless it comes from a doe in heat . They can't tell the difference between human pee , dog pee and so on . They may be a little wary at first , but they get over it quickly . I even know a guy who took a dump near his stand and within 2 hours shot a buck !

I also don't think that it takes too long for a deer to get used to hair , perfume , talcum powder or perfume smells . Once they figure out there is no threat , they go about their business .

My neighbors have had good luck with stringing up electric fence wire about 3 feet off the ground . No electricity just wire . I don't know why because I have seen many a deer jump over an electric fence .

What I would try would be to take hogwire and encircle each tree . If you don't want to go that rout , I would spray the trunks with Tilex or something like that . The strong smell is offensive to them and will keep them away until it washes off . When I lived in town , we sprayed Tilex on our garbage to keep the dogs out until it was picked up .

God Luck !
