Soak some rags w/bleach,comet,urine..than tie couple of rags to each tree where you think the deer will nibble next, you will have to refreshen the rags about every 4 or 5 day,or after a good rain fall...work pretty good on my apple trees.

Please be very careful if you try the fishingline tactic. If there are children or adults for that matter, who play, ride bikes, four wheelers or even hike in the area you may cause serious injury of death! Talk about a liability issue to say nothing about the horror for the people and families involved. I'd go with the pepper myself.

Lead poisoning is the most FUN.

The folks around here already know they run the risk of serious injury if they're on the farm without permission. The last two men I caught out in the open probably not only had to get rid of their shorts but the stories they've told will keep others from trespassing. That's the way it works here. Folks will do what they can get away with. When they know the landowners are going to reach for a rifle first, they don't push their luck.

A state trooper once suggested clotheslining folks on ATVs. I haven't pursued that. I've used the 150# test line around some hemlocks that aren't close to the house. Works great.

I'm planning on fencing my miniature orchard. It will be a rectangle about 32'x48'. I don't want to go for the 7' deer fence, so I was thinking about running wires across the inside of the enclosure with plastic flags on them so the deer could see them. Anyone think that might work?

Try sloping a fence at 45 degrees +-. Deer cannot broad jump. bcs

Tracy,

I put up the 8' Deer II fence this year and must say it works unitl they make a hole!!

What I did not do first was a bottom line. This important since they nudge their noses under and then pull the stakes.. Also use the 8 gauge tension line (plastic) or wire. The 8 gauge is stout and will tension easily. Also I ran a 11 gauge midpoint line about 3' off the ground.

The instructions say to use tywraps to attach the fence to the line but I interleaved it and used metal loops at the top and bottom attachment points every 15-20'.

It took about 2 days to put up 600'. Good luck on your fence.

I'm not a specialist in deer, but I have visited quite a few private gardens as a member The Garden Conservency. This is a nationwide organization whose goal is to preserve and showcase gardens of merit and beauty.

One of the plaugues of these gardens (especially ones with Hosta) are the deer. Every single garden I have visited in deer areas has a grate in the driveway (deer can't negotiate such narrow footing) and double electric fences remincent of those in the movie Jurassic Park albeit somewhat shorter.

These people are serious about keeping deer out as they have a large amount of money and time invested in their gardens. Height, angled tops, electrified wire, double fencing and grating are some of the techiques that have been proven to work. This can be expensive, but it is effective.

An individual I know, tells me that they take Irish Spring soap and carve shavings off of it and put it around there plants and it keeps the deer out.I have never tried it or have no need to,but I thought I would share this with you...
