I'm looking at getting a new PTO-driven wood chipper (probably one of the Wood Maxx chippers) and I got to thinking about the PTO HP of my Deere 2320. On a lot of the TractorData.com pages, there is a "Claimed" versus "Tested" rating for the PTO, and frequently the tested figure is higher. I've looked around and haven't seen anything on the 2320 / 1025R that puts the stated 18 PTO HP amount to the test. Any thoughts? Just wondering if anyone has actually tested this or knows of someone that has?

I'm looking at getting the WoodMaxx TM-86H Hydraulic Chipper, which can go as low as 15HP, but I'm just curious what my tractor can put out.

The "tested" data may be results from the Nebraska tests, and these tests may not be done with smaller compact utility tractors. But possibly from extrapolation from larger tractors tested, the relationship between HP and PTO hp is "claimed".

I really don't know, but it is an assumption on my part.

So take your tractor to pretty well any farm tractor dealership and have the service department hook it up to their dyno. You should then have the info you need.

Typically compacts under 40hp are not tested at the nebraska test facility. It may have more to do with the nebraska tractor law that requires machines sold there over 40 hp to be tested. As stated above most tractor dealerships can test this on their dyno, its not a 15 minute test so be prepared to pay the dealer for this work. Deere has historically rated their machines failry conservatively so would not expect their rating to be too far off (at least on the under advertised figure).

Unless you are ready to buy a new tractor if the results are different than what you expected, what's the point? Your chipping speed will be limited to your tractor, when you feed a large limb.
It is what it is.
BTW: I upgraded from a 20HP to a 40HP tractor, but kept the same chipper.

As I understand PTO chippers on the 3ph, the smaller ones with direct drive on the PTO to the chipper head are prone to plugging up the discharge shoot. The belted ones have a higher chipper head RPM and work much better. But they also likely require more PTO hp to get the job done.

I bowed out of a good deal on a chipper because it was direct drive for the above reason. And didn't have the horses to go one bigger.

Thanks for the replies, everyone! 'm not THAT interested in the outcome to justify having it put on a dyno. DarkBlack is right... it is what it is.

Just was wondering if anyone knew the tested level, but now I understand why it doesn't seem to be out there on the web like it is for some of the larger tractors. I honestly didn't know about the Nebraska tests, so this was news to me. Very interesting, and I spent some time looking around the Nebraska test data site.

I think we can consider this thread closed off. Again, thanks to all for their input!

As I understand it, the Nebraska tests came about when the state of NE passed a law that all tractors sold in Nebraska had to be tested at their University Engineering Lab. That meant a lot of work for the mfg's to get their tractors shipped to their test lab and it became the standard in the industry. I recall my father heading to Lincoln for tractor tests several times a year, depending on how many Deere tractors were new and untested at the time. The 2-cyl. diesels were his baby.

Here is a short video of the history of the testing laboratory.

Cool. Thanks for the link, Beenthere. Much appreciated!

I learn something new every time I come on this site. Amazing just how much I DON'T know about tractors.

Nice thing about a speed multiplied belt drive is that you can actually shoot the chips where you want them.
