My dealer is recommending a 6 1/2 Howse disc harrow for my L2500. I notice the owners manual suggests a maximum width of 5 foot. I don't believe its a weight issue as this harrow is under the maximum weight suggested. Can anybody offer any comments regarding this subject?

I also don't think it is an issue of the weight of the implement, but the drag created by pulling the disks through the soil. I am using a 4 1/2 VASSAR 2 row disk harrow with my 18HP Grey market Kubota in desert sand and it works well. But I sure can't get in a hurry. In fact I just spent a good part of yesterday harrowing my 2 acres of field. Yesterdays work was in dry sand, it does better in damp sand, don't know about other soils though. I would think 25HP should be able to handle a 6 1/2 but I am just guessing based on what my tractor is doing.

John,
I borrowed the neighbors old rusty 6 1/2 foot 20 blade disc and disced up about 3 acres with my L2500DT. It had no problems lifting it or pulling it even with the blades at maximum angle in high range 2 or 3 gear with 4wd. I disced to the point that the axles of the disc were pushing dirt. I have ags filled 80% with water and anti-freeze. I can't tell you how turfs would work if you have them.
In fact the only problem I had was I left my chains and binders in the loader bucket and they fell out and I disced them under. Then I had to rent a metal detector to find them.

PS It's dusty work so don't forget to clean the radiator screen when done.

Try to get someone who has the exact disk you are interested in buying to let you watch it work in a condition similar to yours. I have seen several of the light (cheap) disks that would just not do an adequate job and just bounce around on top of the ground. If you have to plow it before you disc it, you have the wrong disc.

The only discs that I have used that do a good job are OLD and HEAVY. They take a fair amount of traction and HP to pull, but do a really good job. These are ten foot discs.

Yes, when they are burying the axles, they are doing OK! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
