DIY Rick Rack

Late eighties I built and sold rick racks that I had designed. Almost five years ago I came across one of them and took some photos, client had me doing a gate and had the rick rack I had made for his father.

Sprinkler pipe is known as schedule ten. I used sch 10 1 1/2 pipe (1 7/8 O. D.

1. Cut the pipe in 16 lengths.

2. Find a muffler shop that will bend tubing for you with a 1 7/8 die.

3. First bend is almost a 180 degree bend at 2 feet

4. Second bend is at 4 feet ninety degree perpendicular to the first bend.

5. Third and last bend is at 8 feet ninety degree and parallel to the second.

What I had was a deal with a local muffler shop that would work me in slow time, Thursday 10 am, and charge me by the hour. I would take in twenty pieces of pipe. Any two pieces would weld together and make me one rack, ten racks. I would add legs and pads and they were very popular.

We filled one up with green oak, about 3500 lbs, ran a chain across the top, and picked it up with a fork lift, no issues. And I know at least one is still viable thirty years later.

I made 'bookends' from 1x6 board for the foot, 1x4x6' for the upright placed 10" from one end and braced with a 1x2 at an angle from the end of the 1x6 to the top of the 1x4. Set on down, pile splits on the 1x6, and set another however far away you want.

Version one was put togetther with 'sheet rock' screws - didn't last one season. Version two used bolts. IN retrospect the diagonal brace would probably be better if it didn't go all the way to top of the 1x4

I used one out in the elements for a couple years and is now in hte back porch for the 2 1/2 cord I start each season with.

I see that you made it so the welds are on alternate uprights. I used to build tons of dog kennel panels with a bender; I would do the 90s like making a regular rectangle, then the 175 in the middle. Weld two identical sides together with a crossbrace to reinforce the welds. That way, if someone wanted one a tad shorter, it would be easy to cut a bit out, or conversely, scab in some extra if they wanted a longer one.
That would be a good down time project for fencing companies to burn off some short stuff that goes into the scrap barrel.
