Do Bat Boxes Work?

I've had a bat house on the south facing side of my barn for years and was disappointed to never see any sign of bats using it. When I repainted the barn I took it down and a bat flew out! So it isn't always obvious when they are there.

We have not put up bat houses but we have plenty of bats. The kids and I were out last night just after sunset watching them fly around eating the bugs. Hopefully they don't eat the lightning bugs.
