I'm danged sure I would have had lots of concerns

However, that doesn't mean I couldn't have defended myself with pepper spray, or something besides a gun. I realize I am being a bit picky here, but I thought the case raises interesting points about our attitudes towards firearms; whether you agree or disagree with my comments. I don't think there is a 'right' answer by the way.

Consider what would happen in a country where gun ownership is strictly limited. Will an attacking dog be stopped? Sure it will. There have been no reports of entire villages killed off by attacking dogs. :p
Dave.

As for me, country dweller, I have numerous shovels, pipes, ball bats, fist sized rocks all over the place, as well as several firearms. Since the guns are indoors, odds are I would grab something else first rather than run indoors. But I hope it never comes to defending myself that way. Thanks for your input and comments....that applies to ALL of you on TBN.

Me, also a country dweller, always have a handgun (most often a .38 snubby) on my person.

Just an update here:

According to a story in today's news, the woman who was charged with "discharging a weapon in a public place" after shooting the dog that attacked her cat, is not going to be prosecuted by the city's attorney.

The story also mentions the huge outpouring of public support where the majority felt the cat owner was justified in using deadly force to kill the dog.

I say, GOOD FOR HER. Perhaps now some dog owners will take more care and not let their pets get loose.

Though my dog is not a 'pit-bull-type', he is another breed known for having to be Alpha and is very agressive toward small animals. He is reasonably good with children, but we do not let him around non-family members (children nor adults) without close supervision. If he got loose in close proximity to a house cat, he would probably attempt to kill it.

Though I'm not a huge fan of cats, I know how it feels to lose a pet, and it sucks. I live in the country, where the cops don't get too concerned about discharge of firearms on coyotes, porcupines, etc. Even out here in the country, my dog does not run loose, mostly for his own saftey.

I know some will take issue, but I don't think pets should be allowed loose in urban/suburban settings. And I don't think people who can't/won't control their pets should be allowed to own them.

Why had the dog owner not restrained the dog and removed him from the lady's property by the time Annie Oakley came back out of the house? Maybe the owner was afraid of the dog too without it's collar on? If so, the dog probably needed to be put down. But probably not by the neighbor in a setting where other humans may have been impacted.

I have a large Tom Cat. I would have killed the Pit Bull. When the Police were called if they issued a citation I would have accepted that. I would request a jury trial. If the idiots in Florida will turn someone loose for murdering a child, killing a vicious animal for killing your pet should not be enough to cause a juror to blink.

I would also sue the dog owner, dog walker and Police Department.

Cops arresting for 'discharging a weapon in city limits' - perhaps justified in _their_ view but that is a black/white viewpoint. There is nothing per se dangerous in shooting a weapon in a neighborhood setting. Depends on where and at what the weapon was pointed.

Glad to see the PA refused charges, proabably knew the political ramifications of proceeding :).

As I interpret the original story, the cat was still in the jaws of the pit bull and being mauled when the owner came back out with her gun and shot it.

Thats the way I read it as well.

Well sure, but there's nothing dangerous per se about driving a car 150 miles per hour. It just depends on what closed track you're driving on and what kind of training and experience you have.

In both cases, however, I don't trust the kid next door to have the sense to do it properly in my neighborhood.

Ah but there is a difference in both examples in whether there was a valid reason for the action. that is where the black/white police viewpoint tends to fail.
