Here's a rainy day project that solved my chain attachment frustrations.

The NH TC35 has a drawbar with a large (1-1/4") hole in it. I couldn't find any way to adapt a grab hook to it, so I made my own.

The final straw was when I noticed my chain links were getting deformed and my drawbar hole was getting mushroomed.

Construction is pretty much self explanatory. Flat stock is 3/8, but 5/16 or even tough 1/4 stuff would be fine. I used some scrap flat stock that stacked up to 1-1/8", which is the thickness of the drawbar. Bolts and pin are grade 8. I used a stack of washers to act as a bushing between the 1/2" pin and the 1-1/4" hole in the drawbar.

And here it is pinned to the drawbar. The grab hook is for 3/8" chain.

the pic of the hook you posted from northern is exactly what i have, sure is simpler and a heck of alot stronger than what he made, i have one that i use often with my ford 8000 which is over 100 hp and the hook has held up fine. i also gota wonder why such a large drawbar hole, inch and a quarter is pretty big for such a small tractor, my 100 hp ford only has a 1 inch hole

Looks good.... only suggestion is to turn the pins over so if you loose a cotter pin, you won't also loose the pin itself. Don't ask how I learned this basic lesson of gravity... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Looks like a neat project to me have_blue.

I welded a receiver tube to the bottom of my draw-bar. I then went out and bought some 2 X 2 X 1/4 inch square tube from a local metal recycler and I have fashioned various hooks and trailer ball mounts that merely plug into the receiver when I need them..

I actually bought so much of the square tube (36 foot) that I'm now in the process of welding up a steel wheel dolly for my BH. Gawd I love those new projects!

Where were you when I needed you? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Every hook I have looked at would not fit my draw bar right. Either it cost money, the throat was too narrow too wide, or not deep enough, or the pin diameter was too small.

Anyway, ordering from Northern Tool is not my idea of a fun rainy day project. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

PS: That hook looks so nice I may order one anyway.

The hook is way over built. There's no way I could ever break that hook with my little tractor. I use it with a 3/8 chain, which is supposed to be the weakest link.

As for the Northern Tool hook, it's nice but it won't fit because my drawbar is 1-1/8" thick and needs a 1-1/4" throat depth.
