What can anyone tell me about the effects of pets coming into contact with a mouse or rat or any other rodent for that matter, that has ingested poison. Either by finding them alive or dead. I have been very hesitant to put any poison out because I am worried about the pets. I would obviously place the poison in some type of bait station that the pets could not get to. Rodents are no good but sick/dead pets are worse.

Bad stuff on pets. We had our Cocker Spaniel get into some mouse bait once and caught him shortly after he got it. Vet said to give him Hydrogen peroxide to cause vomiting. Worked pretty slick and the pellets (just a few but probably enough to do him in) came up with the rest of the stomach contents. I don't remember all the details but he said something about needing vitamin K and the poison causes internal bleeding if it wasn't caught quickly.

I stopped using the stuff when I almost lost one out our dogs from it,
very bad stuff to have around, The hounds have very strong sniffers and found some of the D-con I set out under the sink in our camper, one day I went into the camper and one of the hounds fallow me in, I went on back to the rear of the camper while he must have smelled something and got the cabinet door open, I didn't think much of it at that moment, Later on that night he began to start drinking a lot of water and then spitting it back up,
it was very apparent he was sick, I kept a watch on him for a few hours more, all along I still had not realized what he gotten into? I called our vet, and describe to him what he was doing and acting, The vets reply was it sound like was poisoned and had I known of anyway the dog could had gotten ahold of some? It wasn't until then when it occurred to me and I realized then when he fallow me into the Camper is when he most likely got the stuff, I rushed him to the vets office after hours, they pumped out his stomach and kept him on an IV all night, the next morning he was doing much better, Although the vets said if I had not gotten him there when I did the poison would had dissolved and spread through his blood and would have most likely died in the next day,
I never have used the stuff again,

I built a small box out of scrap plywood ( about 8 inches square) drilled two small holes in each side and after settting down a plate of poison, placed the box overtop and screwed it into a corner in the barn. Mice/rats would be the only ones able to access the poison through the holes.

I don't know what a dog or cat will do if they come upon a poisoned mouse/rat. I doubt they would eat it! I think the rodents go off somewhere quiet and hidden to die.

Fred, if I remember right, the poison makes them go to water like DeepInDirt's dog did.

That is what I was thinking. I think the animals are more interested in the hunt rather than eating the rodents. I use bounce sheets and have a few barn cats around but feel I need more rodent control. I have seen bait stations in barns and feed mills but would still like to know if anyone practices this.

We use a product called Jaguar. Jaguar is tougher on rats and mice with the strongest single-feeding anticoagulant available -brodifacoum. It looks like a small wax candle and I nail or screw it down inside the wood bait station. This way they have to eat it there. We found when using pellets they would carry them off into areas where we had goats and then we would take the bedding out to the compost were the chickens could get at it. Remember that the mouse/rat eats only a little and it is usually much smaller than a cat or dog so should a cat or dog eat a mouse/rat it is really only getting a very small amount of poison, not that any is good.

As stated above, rat poison causes internal bleeding, and going to water is usually the last thing they do. I have heard that rats can beat it by eating tomatoes?? Cannot confirm or prove different. Jy.

Vitamin K is a good answer. I believe massive quantities of K are used to help prevent loss of cell wall structure to the poison and the resulting bleed out.
