I have used electric fences successfully - usually over short distances - about a half mile max total for two wires - up and back. I decided to buy another controller and started reading reviews. Now I see perhaps I did not know as much as I thought. Anyway, I see there are continuous and pulse, joule rated and volt rated, and more.

I assume, based on what I have figured out that I want a pulse unit, and will go with a 2 mile rated unit for my uses ( I think I have figured out joules and volts), low impedance vs high, and so will go into TSC later this week to see what they have.

My questions - I assume I want a "pulse" unit and not continuous, and low impedance. Any brands not recommended, and finally, one site said that I can put the posts up to 50 feet apart with the right wire - wow, I have been putting posts about 10 feet apart and creating a lot of work for myself.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. BTW - this is for cattle.

Yes, I have electric fences and I always use the pulse ones. I am using a 10 mile unit to get more bang out of each jolt. As for the distance between post, I found that it depends on what you are using it for. The bigger the animal the shorter the distance I use between post. I mainly use T-posts in between the bigger post to keep the effort down and to provide good grounding of the ground wire. I found that with my donkeys for example, if I put the posts too far apart, they will just push the wires together to short them out and keep on going.

I went with a 2 joule Zabera pulse controller rated for 50 miles. I'm fencing in 11 acres with three strands. My thinking is that with so many things to cause it not to work, and the small increase in price, it was worth buying the bigger unit. I also read that bare wire carries the power the best, and the netting is the worse. I have both, I want my horses to see the 2 inch white netting tape from a distance. Another concern is how well the ground works. I have three ground rods ten feet apart for the best results, but I have noticed what when it's really dry out, and the ground is super hard, like in August, the zap from the fence isn't as good. A friends dog went right through it without getting zapped, but then couldn't get out because she got zapped. I might add more ground rods in another location.
