Ever lose something mysteriously in the woods?

I'd be nervous of having anyone at all nearby whilst felling a tree.

After cutting far enough into the trunk, I reckon it would be reassuring just to have a wedge or two put there and whacked into the sawcut a little - just to help and maybe prevent the tree jamming the saw in place.

But wait! They had bright orange safety jackets on. They must be safe.

That's so they won't get lost mysteriously in the woods.

A little height makes a huge difference. I have thought of making a pusher like they have that works on an old bumper jack but never really needed it. Ed

I've thought of making one too. I guess you've seen the commercially made one. The main ingredient seems to be a farm jack.

If you take a rope and tie it to the tree 20 ft in the air you can just pull gently and most trees will come over. I was going to make one out of a car bumper jack. Easier to carry around. Ed

The thing that is probably on the end of the pole is a metal point with a hook on it and I believe was used to move logs in the rivers decades ago. It's called a "pick pole" and I have one I got when we lived in woods country years ago. Here's a couple off the internet and there are lots of variations.

I never saw one used for their purpose but it seems like a bad idea if longevity is on your bucket list.

Did that crew break every rule in the tree cutting hall of fame ?

You know what? I just remembered something I lost in the woods a couple of years ago. A bunch of palettes leaned up against each other in pairs. I sure wish I knew what happened to them.
