I love it. There are so many similar stories like this everywhere and it kills me people build these big fancy houses in agricultural areas because they want to be away from the city, but then don't like putting up with their country neighbors ways of life. Having to deal with people like this in my everyday profession makes me want to tell them to go back to the city if they don't like it, but of course that would not go over well with the bosses....

While I don't support the whiney suburban transplants, I guess I see it a bit differently. I have less respect for anyone who does something intentionally to irritate somebody, and they certainly can't claim the high road in the future.

There are some cases where this is funny as in this case as the neighbors complaints were silly. But then there are some farmers who ask for trouble. One farmer a few towns over rented a field around the elementary school in a small town. Well, what does he do to this small field right in town and bordering the school on three sides? Well, spreads liquid manure which he also mixes in waste from the local processing plants. I tried to defend this farmer numerous times before when he had problems because people would complain he got mud on the road from when he is hauling back and forth to the fields (they wanted a tractor parked there to clean the road every time he left the field) but in this case he could have went a different route, either a commercial fertilizer or at least use an injector and put the manure in the ground instead of on top. After that stunt the town really came down on him and it was his own doing. Farmers have to be smart with how they farm as well with how we deal with neighbors.

I know if I tried to bury three cars by my neighbors I would get cited for having more then one unlicensed car on my property:rolleyes: Luckily, I leave my neighbors alone and they leave me alone. We get along well that way:) but we also know where each other is if someone needs help but we try to not bother each other as much as possible.

I think that the farmer should start raising hogs.

I agree with Doc & Robert. While I find the humor most agreeable the farmer is wrong if he thinks he IS in a farming community -he WAS in a farming community until somebody planted houses. My neighbor at camp is the largest dairy farm in NH & despite also being the largest landowner and possibly the largest employer in town, he goes out of his way not to irritate the townspeople with farm "dirt". Any one call to a state agency costs him hours of aggrevation even when he's done nothing legally wrong.

On a similar note I once told the local planning board I was going to put up an appliance fence on our scenic road when they wanted to limit white goods at the dump, oops... transfer station, to one day a year because the sight offended a newcomer. MikeD74T

What I don't understand is if it was zoned agricultural. The zoning should be changed to include housing with no farm or new landowners shouldn't be surprised at what they see and smell. I lived in a town that allowed agriculture approx. 1000 feet in from major road. I had to move because I had a business vehicle which made me commercial,a nonpermitted use in that zone. Wasn't a problem until I got six new abutters who were nice until they knew I didn't object to their houses and they were finally moved in,I became a liability to the new neighborhood. plowking

Anyone who complains about the odors coming from farms should visit Hereford, TX, some summer.:D You can stay anywhere you want to in that town and learn what a farm smells like.:D
