Farmtrac 36 HP 2002 4wd -Will shift into forwar & reverse, but won't move and grinds

I have a 36 HP Farmtrac that has been running great, but yesterday I had the bucket low and caught the ground a little hard. No harder than pushing dirt, but when I went to shift to reverse it would not move not move and grinds. I tried 2 wheel drive/4 wheel drive high med and low range with no luck. It shifts to forward and reverse with clutch in and starts to move as I let the clutch out slow and then grinds. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The PTO works fine.

I seen shifter forks broke on them and have same problem

Sounds like classic symptoms of a worn clutch but that is usually a slow oncoming issue......gear grinding, slipping in high gear or high range etc. To happen so suddenly, as Whis said, it sounds like something more. You can check the gear forks and gears by taking the top cover off the trans case. You may need to drain some of the fluid to see some of the lower gear shafts/ gear sets.

This may help. Our old M-F 65 gets stuck in two gears at the same time every once in a while.

I vote shifting fork or shifter lever/ball issues on either the main transmission or the Hi/Lo part. My Jinma has something going on the Hi/Lo lever that lets it swivel instead just forward and back movement and I can get it in between gears sometime. I have make sure how I move the lever. Hope this helps. bjr

BJR you might have a roll pin missing at the ball where the shifter handle enters the top of the case (if it's like an older US truck, that is). Pull the boot usually a threaded ring retainer which you also remove. Note the position of the shift handle before removing it to find a broken or missing pin on one side. You will want to reinsert the handle in the same position or it won't go in. You may have to remove the top of the trans case to do this task. Also, there may be a mangled pin in your trans sump - not good to leave in.

If it feels normal shifting from forward to reverse, I would be more inclined to think it was the clutch or input shaft. One just has to narrow it down. Personally it sounds to me like the center of the clutch has failed. If it is a two stage clutch that would make it an even better choice as your PTO works ok.
