Federal Judge Dismisses Suit Against 'Drone Slayer'

We get the full size military drones every so often around here, and there is no way they are at 400 ft. Surprisingly, the FAA has no idea they are out there, or so they said.

Tacnition's New 12-Gauge Depleted Uranium Anti-Drone Loads - Guns.com

Exactly one month ago!

The guy in Kentucky used #8 birdshot, almost in itself proof the drone wasn't far away. I suppose a goose gun would be better given the range requirements.

Keeping in mind that 400 feet is just a tad over 133 yards, I cannot imagine a load of #8 shot would have enough energy at 133 yards to penetrate a balloon let alone a drone. Not to mention the pattern at 133 yards, you could probably walk thru it without getting hit by a single pellet. And then there is timing the lead... All in all a drone at any real distance is pretty safe from a shotgun. Now up close and in your face is a different story...

Last data I saw, some of those are 10,000# drones.

If the FAA can't find a 10,000# object aloft, you should ask for a rebate on your taxes !

You do realize that most "radar" used by the ATC relies more on the transponders on the plane telling it where the plane is than on actual radar seeing the plane right?
Drop the transponder and you disappear...

Unless you are NORAD, there is no radar coverage on most of the United States and the FAA doesn't control even half of those radars out there. Municipal and GA airports have radar, but those are not federal employees.

Not taking sides here. Just offering an opinion.

I bought a Drone a couple months ago. A very "intelligent", expensive Drone. I am very rural and don't fly over any populated areas.

FAA says I can't fly more than 400ft high. So when establishing the Drone's parameters I set the max altitude at 400ft. A week or so ago I changed the setting. I maxed it out at 2600ft. The Drone warned me twice that I was violating FAA standards for Drone flight height. I did it anyway.

Here's my reasoning. The other day I was flying over AG land and videoing my friend's planting operation. There were a couple houses nearby. To get to my target I had to fly near/over those houses. My Drone wouldn't exceed 400ft so if there were people outside they would definitely know I was flying by the sound I was creating at ground level. I might have been construed as intrusive. At 400ft someone on the ground would have to be a very good shot to take me down. But that's irrelevant to me. What I want to avoid is being intrusive to ANYONE. So I changed my Drone's flight limits.

Now if I have to fly near/over a dwelling I can go over at an altitude that would avoid any intrusion on anyone on the ground. The chances of them even knowing I'm around are diminished.

I'm intelligent enough to not get into small plane airspace when one is nearby. So I am imposing no risk to airplanes. I'm minimizing my intrusion on anyone on the ground. In my mind, it's a win-win.

Not trying to convince anyone. Just saying, as a Drone pilot, these are my thoughts. :)

The FAA has no interest in privacy issues. It is illegal for an airplane to approach closer than 500 feet to any ground structure. It is illegal for a drone to fly over 400 feet high. That gives both parties 100 feet for error before they can have a collision.

LoL...must be why they are selling like hotcakes... watch and learn...if drones themselves are not deemed illegal for civilian use the market for anti drone devices will overtake the civilian drone market...

I just want something that will jam the boom box in the car next to me at red lights.

The Scout [Kiowa AKA Bell JetRanger] helicopter pilots in my Cavalry squadron referred to this as the "Large sky, small bullet," theory.

I bet they worried about the magic BB though.:laughing::laughing::laughing:
