Tires Fill Tires or Add Weight?

Removing weight and adding it again on any semi regular basis is not how I like to spend time.

If I needed to trailer, I would happily purchase a trailer with an additional 1k to 2k lb towing capacity in order to save myself the time and agony of removing and re-adding weight. Plus as George says - what if you need the weight where you are going.

I've got the tires filled on my L3400. Got it done well over a year after I purchased it and the difference is enormous. Weights for this size of tractor wouldn't add the same amount of ballast and were 2x more expensive for a lot less ballast.

I would have happily added wheel weights if the amount of ballast were near equivalent and the cost no more than 25% to 50% more than fluid filled tires. I don't think that I would be taking the weight off one way or the other.

Realistically a 3PT weight alone is not adequate for me. I often decide to use my loader with a rake on or some other fairly light weight implement. The odd time it is without anything on the back. Having the weight as part of the tractor - wheel weights or otherwise makes the most sense to me. I have a ballast box too and if I know I am lifting something heavy I will put that on.

And that brings us around to the expense thing again. Its been two years since I priced wheel weights but when I saw the price I 'bout had a stroke.

Does anyone make aftermarket wheel weights that would fit a variety of tractors at a lower price than the tractor brand weights?

I've thought about that too. Good idea for trailering etc. But again, its going to tie up your 3pt hitch with something that is otherwise useless....unless you are moving water.

I know dealers price differently, cast is normally about a dollar a lb for the weights.

Yep, that's steep. The dealer filled my tires for free. Adds a total of 800 pounds. That's $0.00 per pound.

Most dealers will load rear tires for free on tractors equipped with loaders. In the long run, this is cheaper than paying for lawyers, etc. when a customer tips an improperly ballasted tractor.

Hey my dealer did not loader the tires or sell me a ballast box as part of my sale

I found out that I ought to have ballast from TBN and asked them to deliver a ballast box with my tractor.

I would most certainly recommend that a new buyer have loaded tires or weight of some sort thrown into the deal.

I don't need loaded tires or extra weight.
1 tractor has a FEL and BH on it.
Another 1 has a front blade and rear tiller on it.
The 3rd just has A MMM on it so no weight on front or rear is needed.

WOW! I love this place. Thanks for all the info. Since my only current need for weight is heavy FEL work I guess I'll build a 3pt weight.
