We've been researching and thinking for a long time, and it's time for a final decision. Unfortunately, we're stuck! Any suggestions?

This will be our first tractor. We have an intensive vegetable farm, currently 2.5 acres in production and eventually getting as big as 5, which will include berries and a small orchard. Most of the work will be tilling, mowing, and FEL work (compost, mulch, rocks, etc). We'll be getting a 5' mower, 5' tiller and pallet forks to begin. We may eventually add a flail mower, spader, or small chisel plow to the lineup. We also have some gravel driveway and hilled roads we may be maintaining.

We're looking at either a Kubota L3901 or LS 4046 (or possibly a kubota l4701, similar specs to the LS). The big question is if we need the bigger tractor or if the smaller one will be enough? Advantages to the L3901: smaller size (and smaller tires) means more maneuverability inside fences and between trees. In our operation, this means more growing space and more $! It's cheaper by about $3.5k and I imagine a bit cheaper to run (less fuel). Also, the dealer is closer and works a lot in our area, and there are other kubota dealers that work nearby. On the down side, there is an odd whine to the HST: anyone know if that's normal?

Advantages to the LS are more features (rear remotes, lights, more), much higher loader capacity, more weight = more traction and more power, and the dealer had lower implement prices which help offset the higher cost of the tractor. I really liked the dealer, but they are further away, and though they work in our general area I worry they might be harder to get a hold of and there isn't a backup LS dealer close by if something changes with that dealership. The biggest disadvantage is the extra length, which would be tougher to maneuver.

Thanks for any help!

Either unit would be great. The more features that are standard are a plus in the purchase decision. Tractors are not like cars or trucks. If you have a problem with a car or truck requiring warranty repairs, drive or transport to the dealer and most Dealers provide a loaner vehicle for new vehicle repairs.

With a tractor one has to transport to the dealer for warranty repairs. Some provide a loaner, but you would have to transport that back home. Roll Back Wrecker are pricey.

Some large agricultural dealers provide home or field service on the large tractors or combines. They rarely provide home warranty repair on the same units.

Ask questions about warranty repairs when discussing prices with the dealer.

If the smaller tractor has size advantage, have you considered the L2501? Seems to be a popular newer model and should save you more money.

For implements, consider buying used to save hundreds of dollars. Or consider purchasing from a separate source, such as Everything Attachments.

For hydro whine, it seems that the smaller the tractor, the louder the whine. It's normal.

HST whine is normal, but it's really only offensive if you are in too high of a gear or have rpms too low. That'a normally the first sign you need to raise rpms or lower the gear.

Sounds like HST would be the best choice for your work... hard to beat it for any sort of stop/start forward/back work, and it gives better control in tight areas. If the loader will do what you need, then you don't need more capacity. If you are moving 1500 lb hay bales, then you do...

Beside the size discussion, I would buy the tractor that is widely known and trusted, no matter who the other guy "makes" tractors for or how big they are on the other side of the planet. This may be an unfair assesment of the situation, but one day you will be selling or trading this in and………. It might work out fine, but it also might turn out to be a costly mistake.
Another thing, the attachment prices, unless that is a part of the inital purchase (discount), I would not consider that as a diciding factor. 3pt. implements are everywhere including used. Have all of your prospective dealers itemize attachment prices. Good luck with your new tractor:thumbsup:

If you're considering an L4701, get a quote on an MX 4800 also. When I was shopping, the MX was cheaper than the 4600 (predecessor to the 4701). I'm also a veggie producer, and I was also torn between those two sizes. I bought the MX because the loader is about twice as capable. I cut lots of firewood which I store on pallets. I also unload pallets of chicken feed from the semi(have to unload a few bags before I can lift them). I couldn't do this with the 3901, but can with my MX. That said, the MX (or that LS, or 4701) with loaded ag tires and the loader on is a heavy machine. It definitely leaves a mark if the soil is wet. Because veggie growers often have to get in the ground when conditions are slightly less than ideal, the smaller machines will have an advantage in that situation.

It's a tough choice. Any of the machines in that size will do the tasks you want. Good call on the HST, I wouldn't go back after using mine. If you need a bigger loader, go for the bigger machine. Otherwise, keep some money in the bank and use it for other important needs.

If your commercial, I would think limiting down time would be crucial. So having the most responsive dealer seems important. Both tractors should be very reliable but you never know.

You note that one dealer has lower implement prices. Be sure you're comparing equivalent grades of implements (Yes there are utility, mid-range and premium implements, with price points to match). The better grades of implements are generally more refined, of better materials and construction, will likely last longer and hold value better. I've consistently found the better implements to be worth the additional cost, but that's really for you to decide based on your own situation.

Either of the tractors you're considering should easily handle the work you've described. Probably time to do some actual test driving. There can be quite a difference in the refinement and ease of use between tractors, something that cannot be evaluated just from comparing specifications. Getting one you feel comfortable operating can mean a lot in your productivity.

I've driven both options, and I like the LS a little better but I don't think it's a deal breaker. I liked the kubota and I know lots of people who are happy with them.

Implement wise, I think that getting them to my farm is going to be a reason to stick with the dealer. Shipping costs are high, we are in a pretty out of the way area, and my truck is fairly small. But I will continue to look. I haven't had much luck finding used implements nearby, and I've been looking! Seems like a lot of the lower priced tillers online are Kutter King, are those a low quality brand, or can they be decent?

Both dealers offer field service to my area, but the kubota works with lots of farms around me while I'd be at the very end of their range for LS.
