John Deere 755 purchased new in 1993
I have previously commented about never using chains on my 755, but also being interested in the difference they would make. The last time I used chains was twenty years ago on my 2WD JD 430. My drive is level so I've done OK without them on my 755. Initially I used a 380 front blade, but the bracket changeover hassle caused me to instead begin using a rear blade. I used it in reverse push mode so I never drove on anything I had not plowed. Recently though, probably because of old age, that twisting to look over my shoulder has become more of a problem. I also know that push mode can be the cause of tractor problems. So I decided I would try the blade in forward mode and set the loader bucket some distance off the ground to maybe limit the snow drift depth I would have to drive through. This worked pretty good with a light snow but it was clear I would need chains for heavy snow. So tirechains.com delivered a set in just two days. I spent a couple days experimenting with tightness, including removing and later replacing a cross link. Never could understand why they fit so much better on the right side tire than on the left. In the end I just decided to use the tensioners to get them tight.

The chains have done really well in a heavier snow, letting me drive right through it. The rear blade does a good job and I can set it at a more shallow angle than I could without chains. I can also use the loader to pile snow farther away from the drive. And a nice biggie is I can now securely plow the eighty foot walk along the front edge of the house. Since the ground slopes away from the house, the tractor would be tilted over with one side on the concrete and the other off on the grass side. When things were slick that was a no-go because the tractor would slide sideways, so I usually just shoveled that by hand.

The pictures are the one from last year with no chains, one this year with chains, and the front walk. This year when I finished plowing I felt much more relaxed with no soreness, unlike other recent years.

I have had the same problem.......
Trying to do everything looking over my right shoulder. With sore neck, back, hips, bifocals etc.......... (old guy thing)
Have a long gravel drive and large yard area to keep clear.

Got a set of JD, 2 link chains for the R3s on my JD855, FEL, 5' back blade and have had no problems with any thing. Actually...... Chains from JD were cheaper than any other source I could find here. Use bunngy cords as tighteners. (green, of course)

Was a little cautious at first. Not wanting to wreck anything because of the extra traction on the hydrostatic. Has not seemed to be a problem.

Are your tires filled ? If so, how has that affected things, with chains ? Have been reading a lot about that lately. Thinking if I ever decided to do that I am leaning towards windshield washer fluid at this time...........

Enjoy

I've yet to have a chance to run my 955 in the snow. I'm curious to see how the R1's do in the snow. I see a lot people saying they work really good, but I would like to see first hand. Right now, I'm clearing snow with my 322 as it is the only tractor I have snow removal attachements for. The 322 has loaded turfs with chains and does surprisingly well.

Your R-1's will do fine on cold snow. But snow/slush or ice, they too will slip and either need chains or wait for the ice and snow to melt. I suspect you get a lot of ice and slush (wet snow) in MO.

No chains last year. This year a set of 4 link V bars.
What an unbelievable difference!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Tires are not filled and I have no plans for that. Lots of opinions here about the best liquid to fill tires with so I'll let others answer that.

Took me 10 years to determine I wanted chains. I had bar turfs on my old 670 which did pretty good, as did my 790 with R-4's. An occasional need for digging out or pushing out with the loader, but all in all, they did pretty good.
Then we had that blizzard in Feb 2010...
I am happy I bought the chains. Although not enough accumulation this year (yet) to give them a good work out, I am quite confidant they're prove themselves when that deeper snow does come...and I expect it won't be too long in coming now.

JD755 could have probably got the 4 link ladder type chain (about 60% of the cost of the 2 link type), but he's got what he's got, and he's happy...which is all that counts...right?

I've got a set of straight ladder type that I used on my JD 520, now I need to cut the length down to use on the 790 (R-4's). Needed to pull the 74-112 up a slick hill today & couldn't do it! :( Guess I'll get the bolt cutters out tomorrow. ~~ grnspot110

I got mine on the 790 today! Had been using them on 36" tires, so I had to cut the length down quite a bit. Now I need to see if I have enough crossbars to make them 2-link instead of 4-link. They work, but ride kinda' rough now! ~~ grnspot110
