This was one of several winter projects I had going. I picked up a Coleman Powermate generator unit that had quit generating. Got it just for the engine, which was good. I knew the gen portion of these were not known to be worth much, and after looking into that end of it, I saw a bunch of burnt off wires in the fields.
So I intended to make it into a hydraulic unit for a log splitter. I had a ~7 gallon tank that fit the end frame dimensions almost perfectly. That became the hydraulic tank. I plumbed in a return filter housing and added a 5000psi ball valve from P to T for a bypass in case I didn't have an open-center device connected...for ease of starting it (recoil start). I put QC's on it compatible to hoses that I already use for tractor rear hydraulics.
For a pump, I used a 16 gpm 2-stage, as the engine is a 10 HP.
I gave it a test run the other day in bypass and let it warm the fluid up, then plugged in my 3 point splitter (4"x24) for a speed test/split a little bit.
It works great and the speed of the wedge is great....also alot of the junk firewood I tested it with didn't even shift to low gpm.
The most major thing in building this was that I had to wafer-disc cut-off about half of the crankshaft, as these gen-sets have an output shaft on the engine, that goes from 7/8" straight to a taper for the gen rotor. I cut off all of the tapered part, and that allowed me to use a standard pump adapter housing and standard lovejoy couplings without any fooling around.
With the 2-stage pump, all it is good for (for me), is the log splitter, but I do like it's speed improvement over the lower GPM of my tractor.
I will still use the tractor for it's driveability to a pile of logs, but this unit will come in handy I am sure.
