going to look at a ford 2000 for a friend of a friend, don't know much about this model, he told me it has a Fel and tires are fair(whatever that mean) and the guy is asking $4500 , oh yeah i think he said it has seltro transmission. any thing to look for or questions to ask on this tractor. any other info i s gratly appreciated.

Off the top of my head I can tell you that there were 3 cyl and 4 cyl models, Also there were gas and diesel engines.

Roughly made between 62 and 75, weighed about 3600#

Hp in the upper 30's and 31pto on the gas jobs.

On the 4 cyl models, the sn range is 1001 starting in 62, 11948 in 63, and 38931 in 64.

Ont he 3 cyl models, ( made 65-75, the sn have a 'C' prefix and run from C100000 in 65 to C450700 in 75.

Does the lift hold or leak down,

Does the motor run smoothly

Tires, body, cosmetic stuff,

Gear box have a lot of "play" in it,

Hold the brakes let off the clutch, give it gas and see if the clutch holds (doesn't slip)...

Other than that should be your call cause you can see the tractor and we can't! Good luck.

Boy, am I glad this subject came up. My sister called a few nights ago. Their early 70's Ford 2000 developed 3 point problem. It will work for a bit, then freeze. She said it would stay frozen till the unit sat at idle for awhile.
I checked the various vintage forums and saw a thread or two suggesting to bleed the pump. Anything else to check (linkages,etc...) I'll be seeing her when I make the 400 mile trip for mother's days and will likely be trying to trouble shoot. At this time I don't have any other details about the unit config (gas or Diesel, cylinder count) Thanks

thanks guys, i do not know if it is 3 or 4 cyl. IDO know that is gas, and am waiting to go look at it if the prospective buyer decides whether he wants to spend the $$$$.

I checked with a friend of mine on the coast who has a 2000, and he said they did indeed use the SOS trannies on the very early models.. especially the ones that shared the same sheet metal designs as the hundred series.

To AL3, Sometimes the unloading valve becomes stuck on those units as well..

Yeah, if they have the "one piece" grill then they were like the 62-64 models...less desirable but still good tractors.

Maybee, maybee not.

There were known defficiencies int he SOS tranny when it hit. After a couple years, there was a repair program done by ford. Many units were repaired in field, etc. From what I hear, a unit that had the dealer repair completed, they are a decent unit,though as pointed out, repair parts are limited ( but do exist, model depending ).

That said.. If I was looking for a parade or show piece.. an SOS would be fine... If I was looking for a mowing/tilling/disc/plow tractor.. I'd look for a gear unit /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

For the original poster, Another bit of info I came across while going through my literature last night. Looks like the early 4 cyl 2000/4000 models were almost 'rebadged' 6xx/8xx models. Also, some of the 2000 models simply look like de-rated 3000 models, as they use the same block, piston, etc.. but have a lower rated rpm.. etc. ( a derated engine should be pretty tough..IMHO ).

Some unit have plastic grills.. etc.
