Ford 3600 Diesel. Kubota L4701
I have a Ford 3600 diesel which I have owned for about 2 months. The proofmeter works, has about 1800 hours on it, but who knows if this is correct. Today I noticed what I think is oil which seems to be coming from the exhaust. See pictures.

There are small droplets on the inside of the hood on the left side of the tractor. This is also visible on the left side of the block near the alternator and power steering pump. I haven't unbolted the hood to see if there is a small hole in the exhaust pipe before attaching to the muffler.

Tractor runs fine. Exhausts a little white smoke when started, and then does not seem to smoke at all. Oil is not low on the dipstick. I used it for about 2 hours yesterday and noticed this after that. Light duty use. Went to the neighbors 1/2 mile away and got some hay. Tractor idled at 900-1100 RPM while hay was loaded and unloaded. So it idled most of the time.

I am much more familiar with gas engines than diesel.

Is this a problem? If yes what might be causing it? Thanks in advance for the help.

the oil is coming past the rings in side if the tractor has idled alot it is not good on the motor. If it was mine i would hook it up to a bush hog and go work it for a couple of hours and see if the rings will reseat most times they will and even if just doing little things the tractor runs the best at around 1600 rpms and is the best speed to run at

and if you didn't repaint the tractor i would be supecess of the 1800 hours

Make sure its not carbon and water.

The water is due to condensation in the intermal of the exaust while idleing and motor warm up.

to test put some in water to see if the oil floats. the oil makes a film on top of the water.

I agree with whodat. That looks like "wet stacking" to me. You need to work the snot out of that tractor and don't let it idle for long periods. Unlike a gas engine where the peak gas temperatures in the cylinder is almost constant because of the narrow range of fuel to air ratios it operates at, a diesel's peak gas temperture varies from low to high power significantly. It's lowest at lower powers so it difficult to warm the engine at idle. As a result theres a lot of carbon formation and incomplete combustion. The results in a black, oily residue in the exhaust system that's runny. So put that tractor to work!

Thanks for the advice. I will start warming the tractor up at higher RPM and not let it idle so long.

Not a lot of work to do right now in MN. Very little snow; just cold. But I'll get her working when I get the chance.
