I have a 4720 and after some work in the woods, noticed some leaking axle fluid on the right underside from a 3" round rubber/vinyl seal where the turning gear housing is located. There was also some fluid on the inside of my tire. I suspect this seal was unseated from driving over some debris or a stump. I "re-set" it with one hit of a mallet and it popped back into place. I wiped the area, checked the oil level (normal), and operated the tractor for a bit. I did not see any evidence of a continued leak. Until this time, I was unaware the bottom had this seal on each side...some tractors have a solid cast metal housing. I've read of axle seal leaks on TBN, but don't know if my seal is one and the same as others.

Anyone familiar with this round seal and is it ok now or do I need a repair of some sorts? have only 67 hours on it...so far it's been a good tractor...BUT...I'm not crazy about a seal like this in a vulnerable spot.

Any advice would be appreciated...thanks!

That's a fairly vulnerable location... And I was also under the assumption that the front axle assembly was a complete cast iron configuration on the 4000x20 series. (That's what you get for assuming..)

While I was in the market for a new machine and seriously thinking of buying a 45-4720; the axles, frame and basic structure of the 4000x20 series machines appeared to be nearly identical to the JD 110. The 110 front axle is a solid cast-iron configuration. There are no zerks anywhere on the front axle, either. Nothing on the tie rod ends or the steering linkage - nada.

A call to your dealer (shop foreman might be a better source) to inquire about a possible warranty repair/replacement should be in order. As you noted, there have been discussions here on TBN about front axle leaks. Deere might have issued a notice (tech data report) to dealers regarding this problem and you'll need to appraise them of the problem - even if the leak slows or stops - 'cause you'll likely want/need to repair the problem before your warranty expires.

A pic would be a great thing..

AK...Thanks for the info. Do you know if this is a "seal" or just an upside down "cap" of some sorts? I think I'll take your advice and call the dealer...thanks again!

Enjoy that 110!
