Jim,

Exactly. Big difference in tare down, machining, boreing and mik'ing all bearing and mating surfaces. The gentleman in question did not really buy a bad tractor, but a bad dealer.

No longer a level playing field for John Q Public and the guy down the road who is a $1K less usually costs allot more in the end.

One of the most important questions for a business is how long they have been in business. A compnay that has been around for 25 years is doing an honest business, one thats been around 6 months--who knows. If I am going to deal with a short term company for a significant amount of money, I get a personal guarantee (learned this from experience). That way if you have to sue, you can collect from them personally, not just from a corporate entity with no assets. It takes 3 creditors to force a bankruptcy. So, they shut down the business, no assets, start a new business.

Start with a certified letter, that a new engine is needed. Give them 10 days for a written reply. No replay, send one more letter stating that you will have it fixed locally and sue them for the bill. Of course, if they close the business, you are out of luck--unless they mixed the business money with the personal money--then you can get to them personally.

it is hard to have sympathy for someone that paid that much for the tractor. As we all know, many or most people don't do the research they should.

Just my thoughts,

Thanks,

I found the deal on ebay and wrote both parties. The dealer wrote back and said they refurbish 2500 hundred tractors a year. They said this was the first engine failure. They said the engine was over reved and even the mechanic said the only thing worn inside was the bad cylinder... The buyer did not wright me back.... I just wanted to hear both sides as I have thought about buying a tractor from these dudes before. I think if they are involved in 2500 tractors a year that could help a customer fix one engine.... just my thoughts....

You should not be able to over-rev a sound diesel tractor engine, and high revs do not score cylinders; however, I really can't imagine why anyone would buy a used tractor, sight unseen, and untested. That's just asking for trouble. From reading the gentleman's posts, this is not someone who should be owning a gray market tractor in the first place. Worst case should have been, if warranty no good, pull the head, note damage, buy Ernie's engine, install it, and be back in business for around $1,500.
