I'm not sure what you mean by hurricane straps and what is the ledger?

After the roof is framed, I will wrap a strap over the top of the rafter down to the post. I will fasten it to the beam so it's all held together. Is this the same as a hurricane strap?

Thanks,
Eddie

The railing is killing me. I don't like to cut or weld metal, and with the temps in the 110 range, I've been putting it off. Instead, I decided to start on the roof.

I want the Cupola to be open from below and not just resting on the peak of the roof. I also want it to be square on an octogon roof, so that complicates things just a bit. To get it centered, I used a plumb bob and measured the center of the gazebo and put a screw into the gravel. I then cut my rafters at 4:12 to get my pitch and kept measuring until I had the height where I wanted it. I started out at 12 feet and was withing a couple of inches of what I ended up at.

Then I cut and installed the rafters. Getting the Cupola where I wanted it took forever, but now that it's there, I'm very pleased.

Eddie,
Octagon to square. I like it. Totally amazing design idea.
Does Oscar still carry off tools? What about wood scraps?

Oscar is better about running off with my tools, but we've come to an understanding on what "NO" means. I can't hurt him physicaly. He's too tough and it's just a game to him. I have learned that he absolutely hates to be pushed over sidewasy from his hidquarters. If he does something wrong, then I give him a strong NO, and then shove him sideways. He falls down, squeels like he's going to die, and runs off as fast as he can get back up again!!!!!

I put in some more rafters today and then framed in the cuploa.

It was 103, but not as bad as it has been, so I stuck it out until 5pm.

Hehehe. Booger learned with me chasing him with a boom when he barked at the wrong time or things.

We had lots of thunder here on all directions. No rain yet.

Looking good Eddie.
Will have to stop by and check it out when we head south this coming winter. Do not need any of those 100 + temperatures.

Haven't you had a couple of rain storms lately? I'm sure I saw a nice storm over Tyler/Lindale a couple of days ago.

I hadn't seen the lamp post before, very nice! I've built some similar gazebos before and it isn't the easiest build. Yours looks great.
