Thought I'd ask before I start tinkering.

How exactly does a the parking brake work? I can move the leaver on my 2300 with my baby finger, how is it possible to keep the tractor from rolling?

Is the cam in this diagram the physical mechanism that puts the tractor into park?

Do you have an oil leak?

It is not designed to stop it from rolling, just to keep it in place if accidentally hit/moved by another piece of equipment. There is no park, do not rely on it to keep the tractor in place. OK for level areas, but lower implements and chock tires on any slope.

GC2310,
To be clear, you do understand that lever is only the lock, and you first have to depress the brake pedal?

Wow! I can't believe I haven't come across that mega thread. Great info in there. Learned a few things.

Yes, i'm aware of how to engage the parking brake. it's an awkward version of how my cub cadet lawn tractor works.

I believe I push the pedal with my right foot and push the park rod into 'park' with my left foot.

I put very little pressure on the brake to do this though... and the leaver goes into park with very little effort.

The reason for my question is because it feels like i'm not really doing much to engage the parking brake. but on my cub cadet, you have to push the brake far down before it will latch. it feels like the brake is the parking brake. on the MF, it feels like black majic is what's holding the tractor into park because it doesn't take much of any physical effort.

GC2310,
I believe you can lock it with the brake pedal down a little, or a lot.

It is a wet brake inside the transmission.

How well it holds, is somewhat dependent on how often someone drove it with the parking brake engaged.

Because of the design, this happens a lot.

so...started looking into my GC2400 diagrams as this topic caught my interest.
well what do you you know....same diagram/parts LOL
there is a procedure for adjusting brakes that effects park brake.

FIG. 43: Correct free-play (1) is 20 - 30 mm (7/8 inch -
1-1/8 inch)
FIG. 44: Remove and free the brake rod on right side.
Adjust brake rod on left side.
Loosen lock nut (1) (right-hand thread), and lock nut (2)
(left-hand thread). Adjust turnbuckle (3) so free-play is
correct for brake pedal.
Secure lock nuts against turnbuckles.
Adjust brake rod of other side in same manner.
Make sure lock nuts are secured when brake adjustment
is complete. Check operation of parking brakes after
adjustment is made.
Parking Brakes
FIG. 45: Parking brake assembly.
(1) Latch
(2) Spring
if it helps here is full service manual section for brakes on GC2400
