Greetings from Alberta. About a month or so ago, I purchased a 2010 (I think) - GC2400 with FEL, MMM and 50" tiller with only 44 hrs on it. "Near perfect" condition.
With the assistance of the exceptional wisdom from these forum threads, I have been learning a lot about owning, operating and servicing my new investment.
Today I was in the final leg of changing out all of the fluids in the tractor and was a bit shocked to see about a cup and a half of clean water to leave the drain plug before any signs of oil came out of the front axle on the left side.
I pulled the filler cap off and noticed that the threads had a thin layer of wet rust. I used a shop light to peek down inside and from the top I do not see anything that looks like rust on the interior housing or pitting on the visible bevel gear.
Other than perhaps changing the oil again after a few hours use to purge out any water residue, is there anything else I can check, or add to the oil going back in to (for the lack of better words) "clean up" in there a bit? That is of course if there is anything going on in there for rust cake or buildup that I can't see? I would guess that with the oil sitting over the water that oxygen wouldn't be able to reach the water and cause rusting or caking in the lower extremities, at least while it has been sitting. I would also imagine that some water would be still emulsified in the oil regardless of the separation I observed, so I am fairly concerned about hidden trouble. I would appreciate your thoughts.
Sure glad its been sitting in my heated garage...
The rest of the fluids were good. No other water. Very little metal on the hydraulic suction screen, and no metal at all was picked up by the magnet trick I learned from here.
Thanks in advance!
James
