Getting ready to do some hoggin\'

I'll have some time next week to get in some brush hog work with my new B7510HST and 48" KK mower. With the temp pushing 110F here in the North Sacramento Valley (Tehama Co.) I figured a sunshade is a must. Got one of those Tufftop Convertible Sunshades from TSC ($265.60). The support bracket attaches to the Kubota ROPS without difficulty using 4 carriage bolts.

Even though my 10 acres is weeds, no brush, no saplings, and no junk lying in the weeds (I've checked this several times while building up seat time and getting some running time on the engine). But being a belt and suspenders type, I figured it couldn't hurt to add a little backside protection to the ROPS. The attachment shows what 20 bucks will buy ($10 for the metal grille, ~$10 for the hose clamps).

I guess I really should be a good neighbor and consider buying front and rear chains for the hog. The guy at the service desk at TSC in Red Bluff CA said he hadn't ordered safety chains for a customer in 7 or 8 years.

Re: Getting ready to do some hoggin\'

Looks great! I assume that your parking area for the tractor is tall enough to get into with out lowering the rops. I got hit by a rock the other day while just using a landscape rake. The rock was kind of buried and the spring tension on the rake tine propelled it at me when it finally let go. COuld have used your screen that day.
nice work.

It's a shop/garage, all metal frame, siding and roof, 24x42 ft with 12 ft wall height. Two 10'x10' rollup doors.

Nice setup!
FWIW, I kinda like the the guards that came on my 48" Bush Hog Squeeler, ie, steel strap on the rear and rubber mat up front. Seals it up pretty tight. I have mostly weeds too but there always seems to be a lurking rock or small oak branch that the hog finds. I may look into a flail mower some day so I can mow my road r/w which I don't feel comfortable doing with the hog.
Once it got to 105° down here in central Ca, I put my long pants and long shirt back on ... just too hot in shorts.
Cheers!

TSC has TuffTops?!??!!

( poster last seen running out the door headed for the local TSC )

Ugh, I just called our local TSC, they don't care TuffTops.

Gee, that's funny.
Check page 215 of the latest TSC catalog for the Tufftop.
My TSC gal in Red Bluff had to order it and gave me a raincheck. Got the part in 6 days.

Re: Getting ready to do some hoggin\'

Nice looking setup. I just had a question - I'm not far from you and I've been out with the hog seemingly constantly this year with all the rain. My fear is sparking a fire at this point - as you mentioned it is nice and hot (although today is quite pleasant).

What are the safety chains you mention? Are they the guards along the lower edges of the hog?

And last, how do you deal with the fire threat? I have hoses at strategic places and carry a fire extinguisher on the tractor but that is my biggest worrry. Just wondering if you have any thoughts...

Re: Getting ready to do some hoggin\'

Funny you should mention the mowing-related fire hazard. My neighbor just today mentioned that she started to mow the weeds in the ditch along the road separating our properties a few days ago but stopped when she saw how dry the weeds were. It was 100F+ that day and she was afraid of causing a spark.

I'd say that my weeds are about 2 ft tall and about half green and growing and half browned out. My neighbors keep their weeds mowed to a couple inches height, so there's not a whole lot of combustible material around. Where I live it's all grazing land and horse farms. Not a lot of trees. I've check my 10 acres for rocks and other junk in the weeds and it's clear.

I don't think I'll have a problem. But maybe I should buy another 300 feet of garden hose just in case.

Re: Getting ready to do some hoggin\'

Forgot to reply to your first question. Those are the chain curtains that cover the front and rear openings of the hog housing and keep flying debris from injuring nearby lifeforms.

KK wants $150.66 plus shipping for the front chains and $73.30 plus shipping for the rear.
