My favorite Gortex gloves have seen better days. I'm considering trying a mitten.

Anyone changed over from a glove to a mitten? How do you like mittens?

Well, since Bernie Sanders made this a political topic of discussion................

I like mittens when shoveling snow or playing ice hockey. Gloves I use for handling brush or driving the tractor. Otherwise, both are a pain in the hand.

Cheers,
Mike

Mittens are warmer, gloves are more functional.
There are some good gloves out there, but don’t think anything can beat some fur lined leather mittens. Wool or synthetic lined leather mittens are ok too. They need mink oil maintenance.
Gloves (and mittens) are like boots and shoes or tires. What’s best? Depends on what you’re doing.
A good ski glove can keep hands pretty warm, but won’t last long if you’re loading firewood. Insulated leather work gloves are good for firewood, maybe not so good for skiing.

If you have had finger/nerve damage, Mittens are particularly great. Well for walking I guess. Not wo much for work. Even hard to go get the mail while wearing them.

Having some nerve damage I often wear 2 layers, unlined or thinsulate-lined leather "Chopper" mittens for abrasion resistance and knit synthetic or wool "liner gloves" for dexterity if the metal parts I be handling would freeze my fingers (replaced 2 shear bolts at midnight last night).

^^agree....those damaged fingers get cold quick and you don't know it.

When I go ice fishing, i'm usually bare handed until it gets down to 15 or so. Then I'll put on fingerless wool gloves. And if it gets colder, I'll slip on some insulate welders mittens over the fingerless gloves. They are loose fitting and come up almost to elbows.

I'll also mention mittens work a lot better than gloves for heating fingers, especially ones with nerve damage. I broke my index finger a year or so ago and it gets cold much faster than my other fingers now.

Gloves. I have a set of mittens but don’t wear then unless I absolutely have to. I have found other than warmth, the most important thing about gloves is easy on and off. That way if you need to take them off for a minute to do something it’s not a struggle to get them off and on.

What is it specifically about mittens that makes them hard to get the off and on? I have not worn mittens since I was a kid and don't recall trouble getting them off and on.
