Looking for suggestions.

Best "bang for the buck" if you will.

One dog got our current camera, and have to admit, almost pulled out the Ruger:mad: My own stupid fault for leaving it out though.

Old camera was a Panasonic DMC-FZ7 and loved it for it's size.

Thanks!

I am longing for a Nikon D90 myself...

The KenRockwell site has great info.

I have always had good luck with Nikon, starting with a couple of 35 mm then a very expensive but great Coolpix and then a D70 SLR. I would look seriously at the D5000 -- some of the older models are ranked as better performers but you may not still find them new . The nice part is I can use the various lens from the film cameras on the digital. Canon will probably stay in the game too but I get concerned that for the electronics manufacturers it is just a sideline business

I was all set to buy a digital SLR to replace my film SLR and I found that I liked the new super zoom cameras just as well for the photography that I do. I've had good luck with Canons and have stuck with them.

We have a Canon Digital Rebel XTi, I got it for Katie for Christmas as an upgrade for her EOS rebel. We have been very happy with it, but if I was looking for another one, I would look for one with live preview, if I already had lenses, I would go with one that they would fit on and one that took movies would be nice if money was not an object.

I paid $400ish for the camera (gently used), a 18-55 lens (new), the battery and a charger at a "The Village Camera Shop". I highly reccommend them if you are in upstate NY. He has been there for most of forever and really knows what he is talking about.
Since then we have gotten a filter kit and an extra pair of batteries. For our combined birthday present, we are going to get a 50mm lens for it so that we can take pictures indoors better.

I'm thinking I may have to punt.

If you are looking for something a little more affordable (and/or smaller) than a DSLR, I recommend a Canon A1100IS, we are going to be getting one of those to replace my little Kodak CD33 that is dieing after serving me well for 5 years (and it was a refurb when I got it). Would go for another Kodak, but I like the Canon menus better and they allow a little more manual control than the Kodak or Nikon ones I have looked at do. In addition, Katie is somewhat loyal to Canon.

We have a Sony Alpha, works great, picked it because we can use our Minolta lenses on it.
