Good morning!!!!

Good (Wednesday) morning. Overnight Low was a very mild 11.6C and it's presently 16C. Overcast and calm... for the moment! <dramatic music> The entire State of Tasmania is under a severe weather/wind ALERT!!! It'll 'start' here this late arvo and last until early tomorrow morning + some rain is expected.

Whenever one of these warnings come out, the 'authorities' always say to "watch/monitor young children"... the only reason that I can see for this is that young children must feel compelled to play in/on the ubiquitous trampolines that litter so many back-yards. It's these trampolines (that aren't played upon at any other time) that are habitually picked up and flung to parts unknown according to News video footage.

Anyway, it's 'into town' day for, first coffee with the Veterans, then groceries. I'll probably take the flagpole down too... I wouldn't want a random trampoline hitting it.

That's about it, take care all.

3 more tomatoes planted between cucumber and potatoes. Saw some potatoes popping up.

Jet going over on approach to IAD.

Glad no bears here yet. Heard there were strawberries ready to eat, gotta go.

61F and cloudy @ 00:00, heading down to 56F in the overnight for the low.

Today's high was 80.8F.

Have had that haze in the sky from the Canadian fires. Supposed to clear out over the next 24 hours.

Ten Day now showing no more than 20% chance of rain throughout the entire period ...

And just like that our precipitation surplus will be gone.

Put out 20 mealworms first thing.

Then got the old blue tarp that was covering the northwest corner of the garden area pulled up and hauled up to the can at the road. Was a royal pain doing it, as it had grass and weeds growing through it in spots, making it hard to pull up.

Around that time The Woman made the run to the grocery store, asked for my preferences for dinner: baked pork chops with scalloped potatoes ... (y)

Had to borrow my key for Her car ... since She laid down her set somewhere in the house and didn't remember where ... not sure if that situation has resolved itself yet or not ...

Unloaded 4 bags of critter food from van. Left the lime in there, makes it easier to load the Chapin tow-behind spreader ... don't have to bend down and pick the bags up ... ;)

Sprayer was ready to go, so I loaded that up into the dump cart and took it around back and got back to that ... got rest of the east side of garden finished up, then did the area the blue tarp was on + plus west side of blueberries/rhubarb.

Needed a break from that so I dropped the dump cart and hooked up the spreader and did the entire front yard, first using a north/south pattern, then went back over it again using east/west.

Once I had that done I started on the area down around the house and put several bags down on that.

All told 22 bags @ 40 lbs each = 880 lbs of lime spread. Still have 3 bags left to go.

Even remembered to screen all of them ... something I forgot to do with the 40 lb bag of gypsum I put on the garden yesterday ... 🤬

Unloaded the cattle panels out of the van and set them up against the side.

Made a very horrifying discovery yesterday: found a young bluebird - probably one of the fledgelings - down by the feeders at the west side of the house (500' away from their nest box), on the ground. It was still alive (barely) but a hole had been pecked through the back of its skull.

House sparrows will often do this ... 🤬

Repaired the door on Nest Box No. 1, and pulled down Nest Boxes No's. 3 and 4 and emptied them out. The bluebird that was in No. 3 was actually dead and still in there ... no obvious signs of attack, head hadn't been pecked in ... but I still suspect House Sparrows.

So I definitely need to pull the sparrow trap out and get it set up and baited tomorrow.

Took a couple of loads of weeds and debris up to the compost pile.

Did some more spraying on the planting bed on the south side of the frog pond. That will get planted with day lilies once we get it cleaned up.

Sprayed around the hosta beds around a hawthorn and an ornamental cherry on the south side.

Need to modify my ground rod driver bit which I made out of a duplicate HFT SDS Max hammer drill bit.

Will cut the bit/pipe end off and find a bigger piece of pipe that will accommodate t-posts and weld that on.

Sure won't be tonight though as I'm whipped and having lots of cramps, mainly in my hands. Hot shower seems to be helping though.

Had a great dinner: two baked chops and a large helping of scalloped potatoes ... (y)

A couple of local weeds, both pretty ... and both rather prolific here at the moment:

IMG_2627 copy.jpg

That one appears to be either creeping charlie (Glechoma hederacea) or lesser calamint (Clinopodium nepeta)

IMG_2628 copy.jpg

Might be butterweed (Packera glabella, aka cress leaf groundsel, yellowtop), if so it's toxic to humans if eaten.

Probably be an early night tonight ... ;)
Hope everyone had a great day ... (y)

Drinking warm cup of coffee. 48° with clear skies this morning. Heading to 64° with sun and then clouds in late afternoon. After sitting on porch for awhile my eyes and sinuses started to react to the smoke in the air. Stayed in house most of the day. May do same today.
Humming Birds are back at feeders.

Everyone stay safe and well.

Good Morning All.

71F cloudy chance of couple quick passing showers.

Work day and some of costumers request and clear stated "WE DON"T etc. etc. and they still ask. 🙄

Last evening little after 8 Boo show up and used his noise to check out Mrs. newly planted rose bushes,in no time Mrs. was on the deck giving Boo some meaning full words  Boo walk off than lay down 30' away,I just sat in the chair didn't mumble a word.

Plans for the evening...grill some hot sausages with fixing, just before dark feet up wait for critters and stars.

Enjoyyour evening all.
When we had our business, we would often get people who were very vocal in their opinions about everything we were doing wrong and how we should run the business (obviously to the customer’s full benefit and our financial downfall…).

I cam up with a simple technique that quickly ended such discussions.

I would let them spew until they ran down, and then I would reach into my pocket and produce a business card for our real estate agent, and just as loudly say “Make us a fair offer and you can run this place the “CORRECT” way and show the world how much better you are at this than we are.”

the result was usually stunned silence from the complainer and stifled giggles from other customers.

Good Morning!

God has given us another chance to get it right (or at least not screw up too badly…).

45.5F, going to mid 70s, sunny all day.

Dentist today, maybe get up to the woodlot for more seat time, pup a couple more stumps and possibly clear some undergrowth before felling more trees.

Relatives got off on their travels and arrived at destination ok. Mrs. and I took a day trip to Helen GapA for a “light lunch” of schnitzels and spatzle and red cabbage and pretzels and cheese sauce and other healthy food items. On the way home, we stopped in the Clarksville Antique Mall and picked up amp couple items of interest. Mrs got a vintage music box, my big score (which Mrs actually spotted) was in a booth that had a 50% Off sale, which was an Ender-3 3D printer with five spools of filament, original price $50. Even if it doesn’t work, the parts are worth more than $25.

Also stopped in the Blue Ridge Honey Co and bought two screened bottom boards since the weather is warming up, and a frame grabber, to make it easier to lift out the frames instead of trying to do it with two hive tools (small prybars).

I do need to pick up a spray can of white paint to paint the bottom boards - I slapped on a quick coat of polyurethane last night just to seal up the wood.

I hope everyone has a happy healthy safe productive blessed day!
