It was a cold day today. I'm still on the mend with my broken hand.

Very interesting day in my little hometown. We had a father and his teenage daughter get murdered this morning. Suspect is still at large. I got a call from the school saying it was on lockdown. And I freaked out my son and niece just left my house and was at school.

I didn't know what was going on in town. Before the school called.

Very scary day.

0F headed to -8F overnight. Had ~1" of snow this morning and a couple hours of sun this afternoon but the temp was sliding down from 22F all day.

This winter reminds me a lot of last winter. Sort of digs in and doesn't let up much.

Mostly, I was thinking of an 8N when I saw Eric's Ferguson. Don't they have
some similar DNA, the hitch? I might be mixing metaphors here, remembering bits of the history
of three point hitches

Drew, to plant pine trees in grassland you have to turn the sod back to get to the dirt. A scalper is a double plow that turns 12" of sod over to each side. Then you come along with the tree planter in the scalp. I'm sure it has another name, but that is what I have always heard it called.

Thanks for the link, Drew! The local weather guesser on TV last night was quoting storm totals of 8"-10" for the coast, 3"-4" for the valley, 5"-8" for the Sierra foothills, but no snow below 8000'. We're so dry I'm hoping for amounts toward the top of the range. Here we've only had 0.12" since before Christmas, and this should be the wettest part of the year. The steel roof over the patio sure makes a racket in the wind and rain, and tonight is supposed to be a gully washer. I don't think I'll mind this time though


High winds are also part of the deal this time around, and last winter they took out a few of the oaks around here. One was pulled out by the roots, but two more broke through the trunks. One was over a foot thick and snapped about 6' above the ground. :shocked:

Landslides could be a problem in burned over areas, but last year's fire season was pretty mild in comparison to previous years.

Got the ruts graded out of the driveway and the gravel smoothed out again, hopefully well enough to keep the ruts from coming back. That's unlikely though since the drive is pretty steep in spots and they're forecasting heavy rain and high winds for Friday. Also raked some bare ground and put out some barley/rye/clover erosion control mix left over from last year. If the rain washes the seed down hill the raking'll at least help the weeds grow, and I'm not too particular as long as it's green and doesn't have thorns or poison oil :laughing:

Seems Anthem gave away all my info they had. Any of you have or had them? Their system has been breached. 80 million accounts stolen.

We have Anthem but haven't heard anything from them yet. Hope that is a good sign but I may still freeze my credit report with the big 3. Frustrating to say the least.

Also a member of Anthem. Anthem sent out an email, and or HR department sent another warning confirming our company data with them was targeted. Good times.
